Amazing Draft
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>wojme</b></div><div>So trading one pick to get multiple picks to pick more than one prospect cus the Sabres have enough prospects? Okay</div></div>
Well, you've gotta ask why you're so willing for the Blackhawks to value moving up over using all those picks. It's for the same reason other teams are unlikely to do so -- especially if it's a club like Buffalo, who've got one of the better prospect pools. Why do they want a bunch of more risky prospects instead of just picking one of the top 20 or so draftees that looks to be better than average?

The perfect deadline for the Maple Leafs
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Snowhawk18</b></div><div>Hawks decline, this is probably the absolute opposite of what they would like to do. Chicago currently has 8 picks in the first three rounds, if anything they would probably be looking to bundle two or three to move up into the back end of the first round.</div></div>
I think the Leafs would decline, too! The space between a late 2nd and a 3rd is actually pretty small. I would think the Leafs would either trade one or more of those picks in deadline deals or just be happy to be a contending team that's still adding a few of the top 100 draft picks.

See, that's the thing. Philly doesn't want a "plethora" of defensive prospects. They'd ask for Korchinski or Vlasic -- that would be more of the equivalent value to Drysdale.
Without that, they wouldn't and couldn't outbid Anaheim.

3C and Top 6 Winger
I think the cost for one year of retention at $2M is about a 2nd round pick. Maybe Davidson'd be willing to make that trade for just a 2nd, but I think there'd be an additional 3rd or 4th in '25 or '26 thrown in.
Which seems like a lot for Beauvillier, I know! But it also eats up their second retention slot. If they were to also move someone like Murphy, that would leave no slots to take on a chunk of a big salary as a 3rd-party to a deal.

Fair enough. Absolutely what the Blackhawks don't have either. Unless they want to wait three years on Sam Rinzel who is very high-risk/high-reward right now.

yup. That is a terrible trade. Draft picks be movin' the other direction to take on a 29-year old making that much!

Murphy has been brutal this year. Maybe if Chicago is keeping half the salary, they squeeze out a first . . . cause then the cap space would be moving in the right direction.

Everyone's already covered the big stuff. But here's one thought as you're thinking of deals . . . that swap of 4th round picks doesn't make sense. Who, at this point, has a clue about which team--NYR or EDM--will have the better pick? Usually you swap picks to give a clear benefit to one team ("Hey, we'll give you this guy if you'll trade us your 3rd for 4th")

Hawks get a 3rd and potentially a very flippable contract at the TDL.</div></div>
I don't think salary cap impact means much at all to Chicago, as far as this deal goes. Getting a third round pick for that cap hit sounds fine to me. But they are not really making deals thinking about net cap impact.

So I want to challenge this roster on some of the more minor details . . . and maybe you're just thinking of the rest as filler for the purpose of posting the big moves, but there's a few things worth mentioning . . .
Vlasic is not getting that much $$$ so soon. Guttmann, either: he is recovering from surgery and may not even start this year with Chicago. Not sure some other guys will be ready: Misiak, Savoie . . . Commesso, maybe. I heard Chris Peters, I think, saying that Moore is likely needing two years of development in college hockey.

Blackhawks are trying to get minutes to Soderblom; he can be their #1 in goal by next year, so, no, adding Murray does not do anything for them.
Getting a good prospect to take on that salary might be enticing . . . Davidson has been much more keen on getting draft picks, though. I think it would have happened already at this year's draft. A big problem is his injury history, though, as klassic points out. Also, despite his talent, he's also another 5'9 prospect who would be joining a prospect pool that is increasingly looking much smaller than they would like. Toronto's 2024 First might make it happen, though.

depending on what the considerations are . . . they took a 2nd for 2 years of Dickinson at around the same cap hit. An EDM first would presumably fall pretty close to the second . . . Davidson would probably accept a 2026 first -- he likes stacking up the picks, and hey! maybe the bottom falls out in EDM and TOR in the next couple years and those picks wind up being lottery.

Sorry to post a big nothing . . . annoyed at reading 800 tweets, etc, today about how Chicago is $20 Million from the cap floor, and that's the only reason they overpaid AA.
But look where they are when they sign a bunch of their own free agents . . . about one bad contract away from the cap floor. Matt Murray, come on down!

VAN - CHI
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>BenningTruther</b></div><div>yes the biggest thing the canucks need is cap space. if chicago wants to move up it is a unique situation with the flat cap where both teams can help each other. chicago needs 20+ mil to even hit the floor so unless your gonna throw money at free agents that will hurt you down the line this deal makes sense for both sides im sorry you dont see that. take all the players out and it would cost chicago way more in picks to move up in this stacked draft</div></div>
the cap floor is not really an issue. Chicago needs $20M but that's with only 13 contracts locked in! By the time they re-up Kurashev, the lesser Jones, and a few others, they will be one free agent and one bad contract away from the floor. The pressure is on the several teams who would like their bad contract to be the one Chicago takes. ("hello, new Toronto GM. Can you believe what they're expecting us to take on to move up 8 spots in the draft? Get Matt Murray ready . . . we're in for another ex-Leaf goalie.")

A Modern Day Re-Creation of the Lindros Trade an attempt
This is an interesting exercise -- I get the sense the OP was not suggesting this was a possibility, just trying to see what a comparison might look like.
The thing is: I don't think Philadelphia has what it takes to make the comparison works. These comps just don't stack up: e.g., Scott Wheeler's under-23 prospect ranking last Summer had Cutter Gauthier at #35, well behind Blackhawks prospect Frank Nazar. Forsberg was a much higher rated prospect. Gauthier does not move the needle. Hextall had won a Vezina and made 3 all-star appearances. Provorov can't hold a candle to Duchesne. I don't think it quite stacks up.
