I think everyone is really underestimating the numbers on Pettersson and Hughes, the latter especially. The Canucks might have a case in low balling Petey, given his GP's, but it will very likely cost them in term. I would imagine his play in the bubble will be what the agents hold under Jim's nose as the smell test. If you get him at 7.5, think two to three years.
Hughes, on the other hand, is entirely different. We're talking about about one of the league's leading scoring defensemen over the last two seasons, and he did that as a 20 and 21 year old. And one of his prime comparables, Cale Makar, is also RFA. That will muddy things, unless Makar's side get their business done early. IMO, I don't see Hughes coming in under 8 million per. He may have been exposed defensively last season, but he certainly wasn't alone on that team, on the bench AND behind it.
While I think bridge deals are what make the most sense for all parties, getting either of them at 6 to 6.5 million might be wishful thinking, especially given who their agents are. If either do come in that low, I'd be shocked if the term was longer than two seasons.
