Avalanche 2021 Offseason

Created by: jd11uo
Team: 2021-22 Colorado Avalanche
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 18, 2021
Published: Jul. 18, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Gabe and Saad sign at slight discounts (Saad says he loves Colorado and wants to stay). Newhook isn't ready to center the second line - and neither is Jost - so Kadri stays (he was a beast in the playoffs during the bubble, I imagine Joe sits him down and straightens him out after this past post-season). Bring in Glendening on a 1 year contract to help solidify the 4th line/penalty killing unit with Bellmare not being brought back and trading away Compher for extra cap space (sending him to CBJ as they need some center help). Leave Kaut, Ranta, Bowers, & Maltsev in the minors where they can play big minutes rather than on 4th line duty. O'Connor has earned his spot and can move up to third line if necessary in event of injuries, same with Newhook who can move up and down line-up as injuries occur. Bring Suter in on a 1 year F*** Minnesota deal and have him mentor Timmins/Byram because I don't think EJ is leaving LTIR. Bunting might be a sneaky signing based on a small sample size last year. Frankie starts year on IR and we ride Gru and JJ until he can come back.

The team is left with just over $4mil in cap space which can be used for deadline deals or to resign Burky next offseason, or we hold onto it for Mack's next contract.

I'd love to make a deal for Alex Tuch and have him replace Saad if Joe can't make that signing (or instead of that signing). Not sure what we'd give for Tuch but I'd think one of our center prospects plus a pick or two to get a big body signed to a decent contract with some term who has the speed to keep up with our skaters.

Not really sure Compher gives the CBJ anything they don’t already have in spades - depth offense.

Glendening is interesting. I can't decide if we should find a vet for that 4th line C role or see if Bowers can hack it and have a lesser known guy waiting as the 13th forward in case things don't go well. I like the addition of Bunting for sure.

I think Gabe takes that AAV for 8 years, don't know about 6. Who knows tho. The Makar contract looks very realistic.
Why do you think EJ stays on LTIR? I hope he's back he brings out the best in Girard

I think you can get Jost for cheaper than that. Landy could sign for that at term of 7-8 years. But EJ will not be LTIR next season.

I have a hard time envisioning Gabe leaving Colorado and going to a team offering him the $9-10m that his agent has stated when the vast majority of the teams who can afford that, without hurting the rest of their current roster or future, aren’t contenders when Colorado very much is. He was mentored by Milan who spent his entire career in Colorado, his GM is Joe who spent his entire career there and all signs indicate he loves the locker room. Sakic lowballed with the $5.5 offer because of the RNH contract (not saying that’s comparable at all) but I’m confident they’ll meet in the middle between the $5.5-10m around where I’ve projected.

For EJ, Pat Brisson, his agent, came out a month or so ago stating that Erik’s still dealing with post-concussion symptoms from the January 30, 2021 injury against Minnesota. He’s spent most of this year completely away from the team (not even using the facilities), mainly at his second home in southern Cali trying to cope with the injuries. For the symptoms to be around for this long with no promising progress I don’t picture seeing him leaving LTIR for the coming season. I would love it if he could because he’ll bring that steady vet presence on the backend and would give us three solid pairings as well as his grit and penalty killing expertise that we will be missing with Gravy gone

We might be able to get Jost cheaper on a bridge but I was using Andrew Copp as a comparable as their stats and usage have been fairly similar. Copp has been making 2.8m the last two years and I think Jost has shown a higher ceiling with his growth the last season and a half
