Isles Revisionist History
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>turtlemountain</b></div><div>It’s interesting to look back on that Toews trade. It was awful on day 1 and only looks worse in hindsight.
Toews immediately signs a 4x$4.1M, which instantly becomes one of the best value contracts in the league as he plays top pairing minutes and gets some Norris votes.
The Isles get 2 second round picks. They trade the 2021 pick in the Andrew Ladd cap dump. That pick became JJ Moser who is pretty good.
The 2022 pick became Calle Odelius. Not sure where he projects at this point.</div></div>
Then you look and see what Pulock and Pelech have turned into...........I don't blame NY for choosing to move on from Toews over those guys, but boy it did not age well.

Likely if Captain Returns
Girard is going to need to have a pretty good season to get that kind of return, especially since we are in a position of needing to dump cap. My main issue here is that I think we need to keep Annunen at all costs. Georgiev will likely price himself out of CO after 24-25 and I don't know that we have any better options than keeping Annunen and giving him a shot.

Wouldn't mind this pickup. Based on Aamodt and Scheuneman hitting waivers I'd say we are looking strongly at either Hunt or Malinski in that 7th role. I'd welcome another person to come in the last few games and make that more of a battle.

I think there's a team that will offer him 7 years. The way teams are spending money these days that wouldn't shock me. I'd hope we could just get a 7 year contract with him honestly.

His last 3-4 years are likely going to see a major decline so they should build that into his total compensation. $52M vs $60M is a big difference as is the AAV. Paying a guy halfway to age 31 $7.5M at the <em>very beginning</em> of an 8 year deal is tough to swallow.</div></div>
I don't disagree, but its going to be a number that is not good for his last couple of years. The reality is that our window is likely over in about 7 years or so when all these guys are getting into the back end of their 30s. If he wants to take a discount to stay here, we're gonna have to meet him somewhere in the 7-8 range I would bet.

Which is honestly the right call by Bednar. He had his better games at Forward last year and that's where he should prove himself as a player. He won't, but that's where he should try. My guess is we might move him for a 7th before he hits waivers.

Where do they finish
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>HockeyBoy87</b></div><div>I disagree some of this. Last season, Jarry injuries as well as a terrible, slow, and bad defensively bottom six and a mediocre defense led the team to miss, and it was only by one point. By adding a plethora of fast, defensively responsible bottom six players that could earn a spot would be enough to get this team back to the playoffs. But on top of that, they also snagged Karlsson, which no matter what will be an upgrade over Petry, and added Graves which will also help the defense (you already mentioned the defense being good, which I agree with, but I had to emphasize these additions) And on top of that, Jarry supposedly got his injury over with, so he should be back to a really good level this year. IMO, this team should most definitely make it, probably at WC1 but possibly top 3 in the division if a lot goes right for them</div></div>
Yeah, you're right about Jarry and I had forgotten about those injuries he had. I will say that Lars Eller is the exact opposite of fast and I was pretty confused that he got the deal he did. But I like Nieto going over there.

Jarry is going to need to ball out and the bottom 6 will need to over-perform if this team wants to return to the playoffs. If EK can replicate last season, then they will likely be in the playoff conversation no matter what. But I've got doubts about the bottom 6 and the stamina of the top 6. I will say the defense looks pretty good overall. Adding Graves will prove to be a bigger gain than EK in my mind.

Oh I agree with you completely. I think Toronto is VERY unrealistic about: 1. Their ability to get Nylander signed for a reasonable price. 2. Their ability to get value in return for Nylander. Gonna be VERY interesting to watch that situation play out.

The Zegras situation so similar to the Nylander situation. No team is going to trade what would be needed to get those guys, but Anaheim and Toronto would need to get a HAUL to justify the trade of either. Not happening.

Yup. We'll see the bottom 6 tomorrow and likely some of the top 6 Monday would be my guess. I'd say Evan Rawal is correct in assuming that Dermy is now fighting for his NHL life. Bednar saying that he's a forward takes away his "flexibility" that kept him on the roster in the past. I would imagine that Tufte or Oloffson overtakes him for the 13th forward spot without much of a fight.

Yup, Arizona needs defense. And they need to wait and grow it like they've done their forward corps. This has the potential to be a GOOD team in one or two years. Don't waste draft capital by not being patient.

The high-paid guys are stars, and if they show out this team is still dangerous. If one of those guys gets injured, that's when it gets dicey. But you can't put any of that blame on the front office or the organization. Tampa has played their cards perfectly during their window. The Jeannot trade is mystifying but you have to be willing to make moves like that to keep your window open for as long as possible.

What Id Do as the Avs
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Affectionate_Side_64</b></div><div>Fair enough, I guess my criticism is that IMO you need to add a 2C to be competitive now and in the future. The avs should be the kind of team who'd be going all in on that even if it costs additional assets to make it fit within your cap. Why not explore the cost of turning Rjo into someone like Scheifele, Lindholm or even Backlund? I just really don't think RJo is it, and if I didn't think the Avs would greatly increase their cup odds immediately after making the right move then I wouldn't bother.</div></div>
And I get that RyJo's recent returns are TERRIBLE. He was hurt a lot of last year and when he was playing he didn't produce like at all. But me (and other Avs fans) have built up some trust with our front office and it they think he can be the 2C I'm going to trust them.
It's a weak comparison, but when we traded for Naz he had 44 points in 73 games and RyJo had 28 in 55. The same questions about 2C were being asked about Naz and he stepped up big time. So yes, we're being hopeful about this season but there's some good reason for that hope. What I also have faith in is that if the RyJo experiment is a complete bust I will bet money that we see Sammy G traded for a replacement before January. Bednar kept mixing things up last year until he found a grouping that worked and last year's team FAR outperformed expectations. So yeah, we could try and get a super upgrade at 2C, but I trust this FO to make the right calls.

What Id Do as the Avs
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Affectionate_Side_64</b></div><div>No, you won the cup because you had a much stronger forward group, not amount of career revival is going to turn RJo, Drouin and Lehkonen into Kadri, Burakovsky and Landeskog. But, your defense is so strong that you COULD contend still if you made a few smart moves. The last time you traded a top 4D it was for a 2C as well.
I'm going to ask you a very simple question and I want you to answer honestly - do you think the roster I proposed above would help your chances of winning over that of your current roster?
Maybe the cup win has affected your view because the answer seems obvious to me.</div></div>
Don't get me wrong, I like the roster you proposed here. Hertl as 2C would rock. Benning and Jack Johnson together doesn't thrill me at all, but that's the give and take of any trade. What I don't like is dedicating 7 years to Hertl. What the Avs are trying to do right now is keep their window open for as long as possible. That means not tying down term to expensive guys because the price to keep MacKinnon, Rantanen and Makar together for their entire careers is going to be STEEP. What I like most about the Avs' current roster is that it allows us to remain competitive and keep our window open for longer.
And for what it's worth, I don't want Lehkonen to turn into anything else. Dude is already awesome for us.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Affectionate_Side_64</b></div><div>Yeah that's fine to trade young players for futures, I'm just saying that's par for the course with young players. If you were going to trade him, I think it would have been wiser to address the hole he was unable to fill, rather than acquiring a 3C. I'm not angry about the Avs, I like the Avs. If thing Avs were actually my first team, I'd legitimately be angry that they're wasting the cup window they're in but failing to upgrade an awful forward group with a bloated defense core that they could trade from to acquire assets and cap space.</div></div>
Let me tell you, it's quite impossible to be mad at your team when they won a cup recently. I'll say for the last time that when we acquired Kadri and Burakovsky we were not seen as cup contenders. There were quite a few people that thought Toronto won that trade by getting Barrie. We have a pro-scouting department that has found gems for us and a coaching staff that helps guys find their roles well. You won't find many Avs fans on this site or in the general public who think this has been mismanaged in any way.
