I partly disagree with this. I haven't seen much growth from Ryan for this to be an immediate red flag for me. If Canes want to increase chances of competing this year they do this deal to rid the full Gardiner contract unless he is slated for LTIR. Getting a 2nd from Montreal in the deal isn't bad.

I just wouldn’t give up on our first rounder from 2 years ago at this point when his ceiling is still pretty high. He had a really flukey eye injury that derailed any momentum but should be healthy going into this year. Wouldn’t really want to make any moves with him for at least another year as I think he’s much more valuable to us than another team. Also think we can dump Gardiner with a 2 and 4/5 if we wanted to

Well, I guess thats just where I dont see it. I think his ceiling is 3rd line center a la Lucas Wallmark, and I dont think you can dump Gardiner in this $ environment for anything short of an overpayment. would probably take a 1st and a 2nd IMO.
