Reasonable Habs Offseason

Created by: houseboats
Team: 2021-22 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 19, 2021
Published: Jul. 19, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Schmaltz trade justification: Habs weak at C after danault leaves and schmaltz is owed more in real dollars than his cap hit, while AZ is trying to get rid of real dollars. Draft capital plus serviceable player now at less of a cap hit and less real dollars.

Arz might be stoked to get rid of NS's contract but I am curious if that would be enough. It would purely depend if he had actual value around the league or not though and its tough to say

Except that Byron isn't a center and Arizona is thin there, too, and Byron is a bottom-6 forward and Schmaltz is a top-6 forward.

Hence the draft capital. AZ would have 5 second rounders with this trade. I guess it depends exactly what the Yotes want to accomplish.

Arizona would be lucky if two of those five picks turned into actual NHL players in the 2023-2024 season. Meanwhile, losing Schmaltz would virtually guarantee losing any chance of escaping the Central Division cellar by then. Unlike Buffalo or Columbus, I think management in Arizona is hoping to have some success in the next season or two.

Call me crazy, but I really like the thought of Mattias Norlinder on the Habs third d pair this year! Puck moving d that has very good offensive skills I think he is a darkhorse to make the Habs out of training camp
