Description
tough guy to lose but some valuable money is freed up (IF THIS IS TRUE, obviously). keeping zar is huge. signing back gaud and zar with roughly 8M plus to work with. imo one of zuck or petty won't be on the team next year. they still need to go after their tough/gritty guy(s) and a goalie

They need to shed more cap than that.

I think they have a deal. They could have done so many things differently. Like have Carter come out and say he'd retire if he was picked. He's only owed 2 million next year. All he'd have to say is, it's not worth it. Don't pick me, I want to finish my career with my childhood team.
Boom opens up a space for a guy like Tanev.
Of all the people not on the roster Tanev and ZAR are the ones they least want to see gone.
The only way anyone wants to see Tanev gone is if he's picked and traded back with a smaller cap hit.

Tanev is a very under rated player. His speed is just a problem for other people and he can put the puck in the net.

obviously its tough to lose him but i think they can look to FA and replace him. don't get me wrong his energy will be tough to match but i think they can replace him with a cheaper option.

I don't think they use FA to replace him. I think OConnor comes up.
That's my guess. This isn't a team lacking in bottom 6 forwards.
To some sense they need to make room for some of the younger guys.
But the reality is, Tanev is disruptive on the ice, and they'd be luck to find anyone capable of actually replacing that be in FA or internal. You just don't find guys that fast who can play hockey with a physical edge.

maybe gaudreau replaces him? showed scoring ability last yr. o'connor an option too, bring size. either way they'd both be cheap options to save cap.

probably, but the reality is, this isn't getting them closer to a cup.
If we are moving Taven out to give ZAR and Gaudreau raises we didn't really get anywhere. If anything they went backwards from last season.

zar won't get paid a hell of a lot, under 2M imo. gaudreau will get under 1 or at 1 at the most. one of zuck or petty will be gone i think so they'll have some space to work with but it has to be used wisely. tanev is not the be all and end all of this team tho lets be real

no he's not. but he was a sign of life on an otherwise underwhelming bottom 6.
I know there is an analytics myth that ZAR made the 4th line go, but he didn't. It was Tanev's speed that put people on their heels. He was always a threat to break out and no one could catch him.
They lost that, and they have no replacement for it.
This is a team that was built on speed. You basically lost your 2 fastest players out the bottom 6 in McCann and Tanev.
So you aren't talking simply about players leaving but frankly team identity. Who are they now?

i see pens fans trading all the big contracts for picks which in a dream world would be lovely but "dream world" is the key. veterans make the most sense for this team and they'll be fairly cheap. petty will get moved because of their cap situation but i envision zuck staying and not playing w geno ever again lol. getzlaf has history with burke and he can be a carter typed player. stastny is still a solid man and can be a solid top 6 winger beside geno. nemeth offers the size and solid play in his own end which the pens need. tried to keep it realistic
