Col and CBJ Swap Underperforming Centers DNVR

Team: 2021-22 Colorado Avalanche
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 23, 2021
Published: Jul. 23, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Putting some faith in the young ones. Col throws in two prospects in an area of need for Columbus to get CBJ to eat half of Domi's salary, hopefully recouping a 4th in the process. Jost signs for what he's worth (although, with Comph making 3.5 and Nuk making 2.5 I wouldn't be surprised if this number comes in a bit higher). With Graves, Kadri, and Donskoi gone the Avs can afford to throw the extra million at their captain because if they don't someone else will, and I figure if you can afford to keep the heart and soul of your team you oughta.

I raise eyebrows at hoping Newhook performs on the second line, would really love another middle six guy like Donskoi, but maybe Jost keeps taking steps forward, maybe Newhook blossoms. Concerned about PK depth and character in the bottom 6, could do with another Bellemare type as well. 800k leftover to play around for when the trade deadline rolls up.

The big issue i have with this one is that Domi wants to be a center. He Could play center this season for us but if newhook takes a step forward in his development odds are he will take that spot. So i think Domi leaves to go play center somewhere by free agency the season after. So we'd be throwing away the two prospects for an underperforming center. I'd rather go big and get an actual upgrade there

See, I see where you're coming from on this, but honestly, I think that's okay. This is a "win now" roster, the Avs actual window is maybe 2 years including this season. Jean Luc probably wasn't going to take time from Kaut, Bowers, Ranta, and Beaucage has got some promise, but he's probably 1-3 years out anyway. If Domi recaptures his 70 point form, you're not resigning him with Burky, Bowers, and the hole on D coming off the books, and needing to sign Mack to big a contract the year after. Domi's replacement is on the roster in Newhook, it's much easier to go out and trade for another Burakovsky/Donskoi player to pair him with in the next season than it is to try and sign a minimum 5 million dollar center I say.

The Kadri trade seems sensible, I guess the value's there, I think I'd like more but also I understand how context limits the value going back and forth.

Interesting to go in on the young guns, if this roster does the thing it looks really good, if it comes up short folks would probably wonder why more wasn't done.

However, running it back while keeping things in tact seemed to work out for Tampa, so who's to say?
