If COL stands pat.

Description
Why you wont get Duchene or Landeskog for a discount deal. If Sakic can turn the expiring UFA's into some draft picks the Avs will not be in a bad spot at all. Although this isn't a powerhouse roster, a year of league average goaltending or better and the playoffs arent unimaginable. Sakic is under no pressure to "cave" and give his top guys away for nothing, also he would have 10M$ + in cap space for FA's.

Any draft picks that the Avs acquire for their expiring UFAs won't be that high wouldn't help the Avs for years if at all.
The Duchene, Landeskog, MacKinnon leadership doesn't seem to be working for the Avs. Sure the Avs want a good return, but realistically are Duchene and Landeskog really difference makers? They do carry a big cap hit that makes it a little difficult for contending teams to fit them undo their salary long term. Sure they are good, but "what Sakic wants in return" good? Guess we'll find out sometime.

This is nearly identical to what I have in mind for the Avs going forward. Of course, it'll take some luck to get Patrick, but if we do, I really like the idea of keeping Duchene around another year and sorta easing Jost/Patrick into top6 roles. If it gels, that's a nice forward core. And if it comes down to it, we can still trade Duchene at the next deadline or next summer similar to how we traded ROR with a year remaining on his deal. The D still looks suspect, but maybe Mironov will be a revelation, or maybe we can entice someone like Alzner in UFA.
