Oh, I know....everyone but 3rd line checkers suck under Sutter. They need to cut that tumor out asap

I don't think trading for Dunn is a good idea, he's been injured for a year already. It's a bigger risk than having Valimaki in the top 4 spot

My first thought was trading for Fleury, but I don't think the Kraken would part with him.

How so? Sutter won two cups with a stacked LA Kings team that was large enough to play his game. The game has gotten smaller and faster in the last 10 years. His players hated him when he was finally canned in LA, and his record as a GM was awful. Hiring him was a move by ownership to relive the "glory year" of the red mile. The team did not improve under him last year and he has a reputation for alienating talented players. The only worse coach I could think of for the Flames would be Torts.

Lol you have no idea what you are talking about. Calgary was statistically a top 10 best team in the league after Sutter implemented his system.

How do you figure?
They were 1st in the NW div one year, 3rd, and 5th the other two years he coached. He only coached Calgary for 3 years. If you take all 7 years that he was with the team it would be, chronologically (NHL rank, Playoffs): 22nd (DNQ playoffs); 12th (SCF Loss); 7th (1st rnd exit); 13th (1st rnd exit); 14th (1st rnd exit); 10th (1st rnd exit); 15th (DNQ playoffs). That is on average 13-14th in the league with one cup final.

His record as the GM was worse: despite making 50 selections over seven drafts (59 if you include 2003). Sutter only got 3819 total man-games out of his draft classes (4880 if you include Phaneuf which was really Button's pick). Only one of his 1st round picks ever played more than 100 NHL games (Michael Backlund). Even if you include 2003, that means Sutter drafted 82GP/Draftee, while Jay Feaster in 3 short years has already drafted 2422 games out of his selections so far, which is an average 121 NHL man-games per prospect in less than half the time as GM...and his prospects are still playing, so that number will only continue to improve over Sutter. Sutter had three full drafts (2005, 2006, 2009) where none of his picks ever broke the 100 game mark.

His only good trade was for Mikka Kiprusoff, and the other trades he did make, (Cammi & Jokinen) he let walk and then brought back only to give away more assets. He's a terrible judge of talent. So statistically, yes, he is bad.

Im talking about now, this year. He's an awful GM. He's an excellent coach. After Sutter implemented his system this year Calgary was playing like a top 10 team in the league

They had 15 wins and 15 losses (50% hockey). I don't see that as being exceptional, and certainly not worth the risk of having our young talent begin to hate the game, because they played under him. I mean, the guy got fired from the Kings and they were over .500 with him at the time. The below article is a good take on it.

You think he had his system in place day 1? Lmao
When a new coach comes in teams generally go on a short hot streak before going through a slump of around 10 games as the coach implements their new system.

Calgary already has a hard enough time attracting talent. He's not that good of a coach to warrant that risk, and his evaluation of potential players is dismal, at best. So many other options were available

Calgary has just as hard a time attracting coaches, Sutter is a legitimate top end coach

There are only 32 head coaching positions in the NHL. the salary drop off below the NHL level is steep. Other than Babcock, most coaches are biting at the bit for a chance to be an NHL coach again. There are still many coaches with better win % who aren't on contract. Players are harder to get than coaches. With any luck, Sutter will be canned and Kirk Mueller can take over.

Again Sutter was excellent after his system was implemented, he will be here for the next few years then Mueller will take over once his contract ends
