Canucks Finishing Touches

Created by: Phyzsics
Team: 2021-22 Vancouver Canucks
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 27, 2021
Published: Jul. 27, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Unfortunately, Canucks management very clearly only cares about making the playoffs year after year, not much more than that, as such, while this team is a little weak on depth (something that can easily be fixed by signing some sub 1 mil contracts after everything else is done), this is a team that should fairly easily make the playoffs unless another anomaly season happens like what just occurred this previous year. As for being cup contenders or not, as we all know, the playoffs are a whole new beast, and as long as you make it in you have a chance.

When you think about it, we essentially got a one year placeholder on defense for free. We got one year of Schmidt and haven’t lost or gained anything after trading him.

Schmidt just said he's not waiving to Winnipeg.

Exactly. I'm honestly not bothered about it. Would it have been nice to get more? Sure. But we didn't lose anything, instead we gained cap space which is always helpful.

Check again, he must've changed his mind 'cause that exact trade was just confirmed lol

Two weeks ago we were incredibly cap strapped but now we might actually be buyers in free agency, it’s crazy. Benning essentially pressed ctrl z and undid all of his previous moves like Eriksson, Beagle, Roussel, Virtanen, Holtbt, and now Schmidt.
Reason liked this.

Yeah, we honestly have a lot more cap space than anyone wants to give us credit for. We can easily sign everyone, fill out the holes on our roster and get depth for injury insurance. With our current team, we have arguably the best forward core in the Pacific Division and a starting goalie who has proven he can not only win 40 games but put on elite performances and steal games for us. Our only question mark is defence, and do we really think our D core will be worse than it was the previous year? I don't think so. It has to improve just because of how awful it was this last season.

I'm really not worried about the Canucks.

I wonder what happened last year that bothered him so much he wanted out of Vancouver, a place he said last year was his favorite city to travel to, to go to Winnipeg, a team he had previously refused to waive for both last year and again earlier in the week...

From a team competitive standpoint, it's interesting. The guy wanted out so I get he was going to be moved, but he was Vancouver's best overall defenseman last year. I will say, it's nice to know we have one less long term contract that that could significantly hamper this team in the next couple of years, but he will have to be replaced and there's not a ton out there unless Seattle wants to flip some recently acquired D. Now only if they could move Myers without having to retain/give up assets!! Dreaming!!!
