Benson's skating is okay, but he lacks the explosiveness that is preferred at the NHL level. He was drafted with the understanding that he was going to be a long-term project and he has since improved year over year and now put together successive healthy seasons. He's likely going to get limited ice time with the Oilers, given Tippett's bias toward veterans and players he knows well.
I don't think he's a piece Buffalo would want as compensation for taking on a contract. Benson is the kind of player that makes sense for teams looking to shed, not add salary. He will be inexpensive and has enough skill to be a productive depth forward in the NHL.
This is probably the year in which his career will be defined, NHL or AHL.
