Plan would probably be to play the goalie with the highest save percentage in NHL history.

Honestly hadn’t checked that stat in a while. Midway through last season it was tuukka. He definitely wasn’t himself down the stretch.

Haha fair enough. The question is, is he not himself, or is he simply aging? There are the odd Luongo's and MAF's out there who keep it up into their late 30s (or even bizarre career arcs your familiar with like Thomas), but most goalies are on their decline by Rask's age. Not necessarily steep decline yet, but certainly declining.

Welllllll he had a torn hip labrum, which caused him to tweak his back. He had the surgery, should be good to go.

Side note about the stat it clearly is very era dependent. Good starters but nothing special goalies from this generation like Varlamov, Halak and Andersen are 22-24 (with a 1b starter in Talbot mixed in).

Even an average starter to 1b goalie of this generation in Reimer is 36th.

So while Rask is quite plausibly the best of this generation, his all time numbers are being inflated by the generation being more goalie friendly.

(Also crazy to think Rask may be better for the generation than Price. I think it's a real argument that while Price at his peak was the best goalie on the planet, he was only that good for about 4 years and has otherwise been just a very good goaltender. Rask has kind of sustained being the 3rd to 8th best goalie in the league for like 10+ years. Interesting comparison. Also **** leafs management for that trade)

Totally see what you’re saying. I used to like to bring up that stat because of how wildly unappreciated he was in boston. All that nonsense of him seemingly being the problem of why they couldn’t win a cup. They won as a team and lost as a goalie. It was just so stupid. I think boston fans have just become so used to having elite goaltending that they don’t appreciate it. Bruins fans kinda suck. Nevermind that i think the stat is he has the highest save percentage in playoff history for goalies that have started over 50ish games (give or take a couple, i forget). He’s been fantastic for a long long time.

As for price, i honestly don’t think there is any debate. Tuukka is miles and miles ahead. Price had a few really elite years, but tuukka was right there with him. Price has also had a bunch of okay years, and some pretty bad years too. Tuukka hasn’t had those. Hell, Price kinda sucked this year until the playoffs. Tuukka at his best has been virtually identical to price at his best, and Tuukka’s average, and worse has been miles ahead of Price’s average and worst seasons.

I don't have the numbers in front of me but from roughly 10 months prior to Sochi until about 2017, price was in his own tier.

But his career is greatly overrated.

I do wonder if there is something about Boston just because they have two of the top tenders by save percentage in the same rough era that make their tenders look better. But there's been so much change in the Bruins from Thomas's start of awesomeness to today that I can't believe it's that. Coaching change. Essentially the whole roster has changed except maybe Bergeron.

Here it is

http://www.nhl.com/stats/goalies?reportType=season&seasonFrom=20132014&seasonTo=20152016&gameType=2&filter=gamesPlayed,gte,1&filter=gamesPlayed,gte,60&sort=savePct&page=0&pageSize=50

From 2013-2016 price has a 0.931
Goaltenders 2-15 were 0.920 to 0.924

(Rask was in the middle of that)

He also dominated in Sochi in that time frame.

For those three years he was in his own tier

Rask had a 1.97 .931 season. That’s a rounding error away from Carey’s one truly dominant season
