Segment Heading: Wallyworld? Not just yet

Barry Trotz confirmed on Friday what everyone who watched Tuesday’s preseason game in Philadelphia saw: Oliver Wahlstrom wasn’t good that night, nor has he particularly stood out so far in camp. Trotz said Wahlstrom knows it too, which is a step in the right direction from last year’s camp.

“The biggest thing is self-recognition,” Trotz said. “He knows he hasn’t had the greatest of camps to this point. The key for him, where he made big strides last year was moving his feet, participating in the game rather than watching the game. He’s working on becoming a complete pro.”

Wahlstrom didn’t crack the Islanders lineup last season until the seventh game of the season and still had five other scratches during an encouraging rookie season. So this slow camp is not going to doom him, it seems, but as the only forward presumably in the top 14 who doesn’t need waivers to be sent down, Wahlstrom can’t afford to be average the rest of the preseason.

It’s hard to imagine Wahlstrom not starting the season in the lineup ahead of Komarov, but Uncle Leo could very easily be on the season-opening roster. The Islanders will try to maximize their long-term injured reserve space afforded by Johnny Boychuk’s cap hit of $6 million, and the best way to do that may be to have Komarov ($3 million cap hit) and/or Thomas Hickey ($2.5 million cap hit) on the 23-man roster when teams need to become cap compliant the week after next.

And if Komarov is actually dressed for the Oct. 14 opener in Raleigh, N.C., against the Hurricanes, would anyone be that surprised? He’s a safety blanket of sorts for Trotz, an old reliable whose limitations are well known but whose work ethic and consistency are, too.

Haha yeah and Gross’s questions to Wahlstrom was embarassing, the tone and attitude seemed to indicate Wahlstrom was coming of a bad season and what he needed to do to be a better player going forward etc. Poor Whally answered in a very critical manner about himself having to be consistent and such. I don’t really get the narrative here. Of course Whally’s should aim to get better and better, nothing wrong with pushing that, but come one, give the guy some slack and cred for once. He needs to improve on everything and be a better pro and fix this and that, blablabla, it’s getting ridicolous.

It’s like Gross and Staple and such take it as an insult if a young guy like Wahlstrom or Salo should start before guys like Pánik, Greene and Komarov (and Zajac last year). Listened to Gross’s pod a couple of times last year in the playoff-run, he was the biggest Komarov lover out there, defended him like he was his family on his pod.
