Winnipeg Off season moves

Created by: TotheNorth
Team: 2017-18 Winnipeg Jets
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 6, 2017
Published: Mar. 6, 2017
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Dream Scenario occurs. Enstrom Waives his NMC (could also be done by trading vegas a late pick plus dano whos a great pickup in his own right) and Jets protect 7-3-1

Protected:
Wheeler, Scehif, Perrault, Little, Lowry, Armia, Copp, Buff, Myers, Troub, Hellebuyck
Exempt:
Laine, Connor, Ehlers, Morrisey, Roslovic
Unprotected:
Dano, Mathias, Hutchinson, Chiarot with Dano being selected (obviously)

Jets now have 3 dangerous scoring lines. Petrovic traded for after the expansion draft for Petan and a pick to solidify the 3rd pairing with a good shutdown possession D to play with Myers whos now back and healthy. Jets sign Mason to a backup Helley and get more consistent goaltending from Helley who's another year developed as well as a capable backup who can get into some games and get some Wins. Jets will finish top 3 in the central and make the playoffs.

Why would anyone protect Copp and Lowry they are the same player. It makes no sense what so ever.

They are both 4th centers thats is. Copp shoots better and will score a little more Lowry scores less but is better defensively. You don't keep 2 4th line centers its just not smart. On a contending team 3 scoring lines deep either of those guys sniff the top 9 forward group.

Lowry is a true 4th line center. Copp has a little more potential in the top 6/9. Copp also is very good defensively which is why I had him in the middle with Roslovic (who's also a C) on his wing. Dano although I agree, in that he's probably a better player than Lowry or Copp, is a winger which the Jets have a surplus of for the top 9 and is expendable. The other alternative is to trade Dano in the off season and make Vegas take Mathias or Chiarot.

Guys Copp isn't even in the same league as lowry defensively. Hes average at best and can't carry a line. Playing any higher than the 4th line he will get crushed unless playing with players that can carry anyone (wheeler, scheifele). Lowry is the better player now and likely in the future both are 4 liners. I honestly don't get winnipegs big love with Copp or Lowry these are depth players that can be replaced easily. Players with top 6 upside can't. (dano, Armia) Also jets have Petan, Roslovic, Scheifele, Little, Lowry, Copp and Perreault that can all play center. Center depth is not an issue. So the smart play is force Vegas to take a depth center so Copp or Lowry.

buddy if you put two different players on the 4th line and tell them to play the same roll obviously the bigger and stronger guy (lowry) is going to look better. The difference is when copp played in the top 6 with schief he scored in every game he played with him. Yeah schiefs is a good passer but copps goals were shots, thats not luck from playing with a good passer. Aria doesn't have the offensive skill to play top s6 he will be a great 3rd line player in his career. keep playing cop in a grinding role and he's going to look bad because thats not his style of play.

When Copp plays with good players he hurts their results. He also had a shooting % way above an average scoring NHL winger which suggests that a big part was luck driven. When a player does something out of his normal take a minute and ask yourself why. What changed and can it be explained. Copp has a good shot and had a good run of luck shooting while playing with good players that were helping fit his performance. Does it mean he has top 6 upside god no. the one thing Copp has on Lowry is some more shooting talent. Lowry drives the play up ice better. He creates more scoring chances for himself and his line mates and hes better defensively. But please let 4 games sway how you view a player.
