Team: 2017-18 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 9, 2017

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Leafs protect:
3 forwards: Zucker, Kadri, Pominville;
5 defencemen: Reilly, Niskanen, Brodin, Maatta, Carrick;
1 goalie: Anderson
Vegas takes Leivo for the young depth and years of control. They could take Komarov or Wilson but only get one year from them so control is key.

Trades
1.
TOR
  1. Niskanen, Matt
  2. Orpik, Brooks
  3. Wilson, Tom
  4. 2019 2nd round pick (WSH)
Additional Details:
Niskanen is the centerpiece for this trade but they need to shed cap to make a run at Shattenkirk and maybe Alzner. Wilson cost too much for a 4th liner on this team and Orpik, while still a good player in his role, is not worth 5.5M
WSH
  1. Brown, Connor
  2. Gardiner, Jake
  3. Rychel, Kerby
Additional Details:
Leafs get that top pairing defenceman to play with and teach Reilly. Lose Gardiner and Brown, which sucks but it's the cost of doing business.
2.
TOR
  1. Krüger, Marcus
  2. 2019 3rd round pick (CHI)
Additional Details:
Chicago downgrades at center but save $ and term and gets a depth defenseman.
3.
TOR
  1. Määttä, Olli
Additional Details:
Maatta is falling out of favour in Pittsburgh and needs a change of scenery and they could use another center.
PIT
  1. Bozak, Tyler ($1,200,000 retained)
4.
TOR
  1. Brodin, Jonas
  2. Pominville, Jason
  3. Zucker, Jason
Additional Details:
Saves Minnesota $$$ and protection slots as Pominville needs to be protected and they are most likely going to lose Zucker or Brodin as it stands right now. This allows them to protect almost everyone. They get a couple good prospects that do not need to be protected in return.
5.
TOR
  1. McKeown, Roland
Additional Details:
Carolina needs a defenceman they can expose in the expansion draft and they get a good depth scoring winger and a pick for a good defensive prospect.
CAR
  1. Leipsic, Brendan
  2. Marchenko, Alexey
  3. 2019 3rd round pick (CHI)

Not a fan of the WAS trade, or the Minnesota trade, no need to trade all our young prospects

Vegas would then take Kruger as he is eligible. $7.5 mil in space and you still need a back up goalie. Depending what you give Nylander will determine what Marner and Matthews want. You are almost better off to not make the trades so you have cap space and you can sign your studs to good contracts.

Interesting Washington trade. Sorta fills needs for both teams, Washington might have trouble protecting Brown thought in the Vegas draft though. Minni is going have cap problems, IMO Leafs don't need Pominville or Zukcer that much and might be able to obtain Brodin or Scandella relatively cheap. You're right, non protected prospects are what they might be looking for.
Maatta certainly is a long term commitment. Is he really that good?

Sorry missed the goalie and you could be right if they do pick him then they can resign Boyle. The point boffins the trade was to dump players and acquire the pick. And the Leafs should have an extra 15-20M for Matthews and Marner.

The only prospect of not is Dermott. Brown is a nice player but he's replaceable. I like him but if that's what it takes to get a good partner for Reilly I'm game. The other prospects may turn out to be nice players but won't have the same impact as the ones they are acquiring and they have the prospects to replace them.

You may be right. The Leafs could add a conditional pick incase but this trade should let them protect Orlov which may be worth it. And they don't need Zucker or Pominville, but they would help. The reason I added all those pieces is because Minnesota cannot protect them all and this frees up space. Ideally the Leafs would acquire Koivu but Pominville is the more realistic option with all the NMCs Minny has.

Redneck: You mentioned Orlov. Well I'm sure he's not going to be traded. But Orlov and Zaitsev were great for the Russians in the World Cup in September. Would love to have him as a Leaf.

I agree, though he is a RFA and Washington is tight to the cap it could be done, though at a steep price

True. Some of this depends on what the cap is and IF they resign JVR. Unlike the other leagues, the NHL is unique and not every average player strikes a deal of anything of $4mil. As an average player in the NBA and NFL you make just about $8-$9 mil
