The problem is that the cap doesn't work for both ways.

Vegas might insist on including Smith for cap reasons, especially since he has an expiring contract and he doesn’t have any no trade protection. It’s pretty well accepted across-the-board that any deal with Vegas is going to involve him. Of course the Sabres can use him until the end of the season, retain on his deal at the deadline and get another first round pick if they aren’t in playoff contention themselves.

I think this is possible. The trade simulator accepted trades like this. Eichel will be on LTIR so he will fit under Vegas cap and Sabres can use Tuch salary to reach cap floor. Good proposal.
