Description

It's optimistic to think that Mantha might be back for the playoffs, but I think it's essential we get him going in order to have a deep run. Our commitment to defense under Laviolette has overall been really good, so adding another dynamic offensive weapon like Giroux can go along way when going up against some of the deeper teams in the East. Not sure what the exact cost is, but as long as it's not going to rob us of multiple firsts and/or top prospects, I'm alright with it. And Braun gets us a more defensive minded presence for the third pair, but Schultz hasn't been bad by any stretch.

Holtby and Samsonov battle for the net throughout the playoffs, but Holtby's experience is hugely important. Him coming back could also be the emotional boost the team needs to really get going. I think these three adds, plus Mantha coming back healthy vaults us into elite status in the East

I know it's a very unpopular opinion among Caps fans, but Hagelin's penalty killing is essential, and it will be in the playoffs. He's our best penalty killer and special teams often determines playoff series. We nearly lost the 2018 ECF to Tampa because we couldn't stop their PP. I'm not getting rid of him when we could end up facing the likes of Pittsburgh, NYR, Tampa, Boston, etc. and need him for a big kill.

I'm fine w that for Giroux, just have to add something to it to get Braun as well.

Yeah it's really frustrating, but a lot of his breakaways are generated because of his speed coming out of the defensive zone. This team has enough firepower (especially if we add Giroux) that zero goals from Hagelin is okay. The rest of that offense should be able to give you two or three 5v5 goals a game plus a 25% PP if you can get a shooting threat (Mantha) on the right side to make them defend you more evenly.

No. We haven’t been healthy all year so we really don’t know what our ceiling is. Backstrom hasn’t fully gotten into his rhythm yet. If you get Mantha back, there’s two key pieces w Giroux. Plus the emotional boost from getting Holtby back has potential to be massive. The only possible thing I can think of is if we want a physical defenseman that can clear the crease, like a Brayden McNabb type

Olofsson would make sense if Mantha is done, but even then it gives us a cap headache going into next year. Also doubt Buffalo is looking to move him.
