Yeah I wouldn't want to see that either (Schenn to CAR), but the only other team that makes sense in the West (IMO) would be NSH - maybe Schenn + pick/prospect for Ellis? I doubt CAR would want to see Faulk 4 times a year though so it's a trade off. Also, I agree Mase won't be back, but Neuvirth has been horrendous and I just hope we don't go into next season hoping he is going to carry the load. Mase has been 10x better than him this year so other than the Neuvy extension I'm not sure what else you could be referring to when you say "the way this season has played out."
Allow me to explain my logic. Feel free to disagree as well. Neither goalie started the year great (and that's being nice), then Mason starts 23 of 25 when Neuvirth gets hurt, including the 10 game winning streak. Once Neuvirth came back, he essentially supplanted Mason as the No. 1 (according to starts and playing time, especially in February) and looked like hot **** during February. Not saying that starting mason more often would have made a difference, but I'd be willing to bet thaat they'd be a lot closer to the second wild card spot if Mason played more games in February. Then to top it off, then sign Neuvirth (the inferior of the two if you ask me) to an extension at the trade deadline, and have since then only played him twice.
Based on all of that, I can't see how Mason would want to return. Whether it's the coach doesn't trust him, or Hextall doesn't trust him, or they both like Neuvirth better than him. That's reason enough for him to say, "You don't want me? Fine, I'll leave". Mason is by far the better of the two of them, and if the Flyers can't see that, then idk what this team is going to do with some of these young potential studs (i.e. Sanheim, Morin, Myers, Friedman, Laughton, Leier, Rubtsov, Lindblom, Vorobyov, Hart, Sandstrom, Lyon, Stolarz, etc.) moving forward. It's potentially bad recognition of better players. That's my logic (if you want to call is that haha). I know i went a little of topic, sorry.
