Why would you go and get Laine for a first when that pick (even if it is top 3 protected) is going to be top 7 at least? Doesn't make much sense to me

Maybe if you want more immediate results. But I’d keep the top 7 pick tbh . There’s some good players available

In my opinion, the team is positionally set everywhere except top-6 wing. Players like Chabot are already 25. I think if they want to get serious about contending they have to do it soon, and not wait another 2-3 years for a prospect drafted 5th-12th overall to pan out. Unless they're getting Shane Wright, I don't think it matters. Better to get a 23-year-old RFA, and start going for it. The "five years of unparalleled success" was promised to begin in 2021.

Maybe. I'm not sure what would do it, but it does seem unlikely Laine wants to stay there long-term.

Won’t take 3 years for a top 10 pick to be ready

Look at the 2019 draft. Zegras is the only F making an impact right now from the range the Sens will likely pick. The point isn't whether they'll be playing games in 3 years; it's whether they've hit their stride.

Not sure if the salary cap would work, but I wouldn't mind a reunion for Sanford and Washington. not a huge price to pay either so as long as the cap works, I'd say yes.
