Description
Sometimes, people are talking about a certain move because it just makes too much sense. That's why I kill two birds with one stone, nabbing Giroux and Braun. Giroux will play wing on the top line and take faceoffs. I moved Landeskog to the 2nd line. I know Bednar likes best-on-best, but that group has shown lately that it could be an elite shutdown line. The problem of scoring on the third line will be addressed by moving Burakovsky down and the addition of Staal, who showed enough during the Olympics (4 points in 5 games, played physical). He adds a veteran presence, who won a Cup and Olympic gold, and could mentor Newhook (who is moved to wing because he is terrible at faceoffs). Crouse adds physicality and additional offense to the 4th line. Braun brings stability to the backend and Byram insurance. I didn't want to give up an asset for a 3rd string goalie again, so I added Sateri on a one-way. He just terminated his contract in the KHL due to what's happening in Ukraine. The Avs goaltending coach was Sateri's when he was coming up in Finland. He was fine when called upon in his most recent North American stint, and has been dominant internationally (just carrying Finland to Gold at the Olympics) and in the KHL. With their place in the standings, they can offer him NHL regular season games (though it's worth mentioning he'll have to clear waivers), while he provides at least some potential to keep the Avs in a series if called upon due to injury.

I'd give up that for crouse and giroux. I honestly haven't seen enough of braun to have much input if he's a top 4 player or not. I think staal would only be able to play 4th line. I really like him but he's over the hill and wasn't even a top talent at a very underwhelming olympics.

Personally, I like the idea of playing Staal with Newhook. He had 47 points for the Wild in 2019-20. That being said, I definitely get what you're saying. For the minimum, and with not having to give up any assets, I think it's worth a gamble that he can contribute somewhere. The risk that he's washed is why I thought it was important to also snag Crouse. If Staal doesn't have much, you can swap him and Crouse (with Newhook going back to the middle), or scratch him entirely.

Braun has been forced into a top 2 Role this year with Ellis out. He has looking nothing but solid. He's no super star or a top line D pair on a competative team but stastically and eye test he is a top 4 this year.
