Avs Building into the Future

Description
IMO That is too much for Duchene and you won't get Drouin for that....now that we got the copy and post response to some of these trades lets move on the logic behind them. These trades are based on some convos from opposing fan bases who said they wouldnt mind the deal so that is the basis of them.

Trade 1...Duchene. One of the latest 30 thoughts mentions Hanifin would be the most likely of the Canes Dman to move for a Top 6 Fwd. Both Canes and Avs have talked Duchene at the deadline so they revisit the trade. Canes are also apparently looking to add youth in net so Pickard is sent along as well.

Trade 2. Swap rights of 2 players who probably won't sign with their clubs.

Trade 3. Tampa is looking for a Top 4 Dman but still cap space to sign their RFAs. McKenzie hinted that Drouin would be the least likely to sign or give Tampa a hometown contract since there is still potential tension there. Avs take back Garrison to help out the Lightning and get MacK and Drouin back together (who signs a nice little contract bc hes happy to be back with MacK and these 2 teams talked Drouin trade 2 years ago)

Trade 4. Vegas claim but it could be Grigo, Soderberg, or Colborne as well, but I just threw one of them out there really doesnt matter.

The whole logic behind these moves is not to be good next year but to get good young pieces in place to be better equipped to be a real team down the line. They are still going to be bad next season but will have a way better future in place

Nestrasil would be a nice side piece for COL. He's a quality defensive minded forward in my opinion. Every teams needs to have a shutdown line!

yeah that was my thought. Since Avs are taking Lack off their hands and giving up Pickard that a little sweetner needed to be added. Not some crazy 1st round pick thing or a prime prospect but a respectable 3rd line/depth guy that fits the Avs vision going forward

Drouin and Garrison would net Tampa far better then Tyson Barrie more like Erik Johnson at the very least.

As a Sabres fan I love the idea of Butcher for Petersen, it makes since. Lehner is Murray's guy so Petersen is blocked. Butcher could be in Sabres top 6 right now.

Avs need some Goalie Depth in the system after Spencer Martin. So both of them can be on the AHL next season then battle for the back up job after Lacks 1 year is up

Yeah don't see Yzerman being interested in Barrie, If he ships Drouin to Colorado then definitely E J would be coming back.

They went after Shattenkirk for Tyler Johnson apparently. Figured they wanted more of an offensive minded Dman. But if they want EJ, that doesnt really change much here, just a slightly higher cap hit in EJ over Barrie

I really like the TB trade (you might need to add a 2nd round pick or something) but I think they would prefer Barrie but that's my opinion.

If they would be willing to trade Hanifin than I think value is close. Personally I would value Hanifin over Drouin but maybe CAR thinks otherwise

If you do take Tippett (Part of me hopes you might take a defenseman, but I'm not an expert) I would think he spends time developing

There isn't any Dman that is Top 5 pick worthy, Still need to pick top talent at the pick and not focus just on player position. Even this came out today.

    @coreypronman
Several NHL execs expressed skepticism that Liljegren will be in their top 10. Believe Miro Heiskanen/Cale Makar fighting for top D in 2017.

Avs will picking Top 4 and I realistically dont think they win the lottery. Out of all the Fwds I like Tippett the most, his world class skating and shot would be ideal to play with the Cs on this team. Tippett probably does need more time to develop but I just threw them on there for fun. I dont think he is Top 6 ready. Avs have still cap space in this situation and if they wanted to find a short term UFA RW fix, still able to do so

This could be wrong, but i though CAR didn't want to trade Hanifin?

"One name to watch this off-season: Carolina’s Noah Hanifin. He played at least 20 minutes in 10 of the Hurricanes’ last 11 games (and came in at 19:58 in the other). I think Carolina would consider moving him if — and only if — an impact offensive forward was coming to Raleigh"

Intersting take on what could happen. I would like to see some picks coming back are way.

I do like the idea of moving picks with 9, they need a goalie change there.

I would prefer ej to tbay, but I have a feeling it will take more. Another salary dump player +pick back with a mid level prospect going there. Maybe butcher?

Draft this year, my opinion the avs board might look like this: Patrick, Glass, Hischier, (makar or Miro Heiskanen) I like Tippett but in top 4.

I didn't want to over complicate it with draft picks, that is just cat nip on this site for people to get crazy about if its a good or bad trade. Just keep it to the core pieces as discussion points.

Barrie/EJ is a tricky combo....when EJ is out of the line up, Barrie really struggles against quality of comp. Without a RHD to push Barrie down to the 2nd pairing, his production really struggles. Hes a good Dman but he still needs to be the 3rd/4th Best Dman on a roster to truly be effective so he can open up.

Tippett is a Top 5 pick, I don't think Avs are winning the lottery in 1 or 2 spot so I just went for the guy who I think is the best fit for this team and Tippett IMO checks all the boxes. I do not like Nico, he has fallen off a cliff in terms of production from the WJC. His shot generation and primary points don't jump off the page compared to other guys in the Q who were top picks. Nico is producing at slightly less than Ehlers pace in his draft year. Tippett is producing at a Seguin/Skinner level pace in the OHL for their draft years. Its crazy once you start to see the numbers.

Let me package a deal then. Hanfin/Rask for Panarin, Forsling, and 2018 1st round pick.

I agree with the assessment of barrie. Keeping him in the second pairing with lots of o-zone starts to me is where we will get the best out of him.

With have dman we get back in a possible 9 trade will be telling as well. Established top 4 guy? Guy who will have to work his way up? But I'm more excited about getting a dman because I saw the improvements pratt and bednar had on the younger dman. Ie Z, Lindholm. They younger guys just seemed to respond better.

As for draft, we could debate rankings and fits all day long. That's a drink beer make a coga/Skywalker podcast on the draft haha but I do see how tippett would fit the avs. Rw, great shot, shot first, and a very underrated hockey IQ, and size. In the top 4 we are getting a great player. Which I'm excited for. Still hoping for another pick in the top 31, but they have drafted much better so I'm still exited
