No need for Pens to gut their team and future for rental.

Yes, there is. They need a second line wing to be competitive in the East. He’s the best available.

Poulin is a future third liner. Legare may never make the NHL. Pettersson has been healthy scratched and demoted to a third pairing role (and clearing his cap hit helps the team this summer). Kapanen has been bad

This is hardly gutting the team or its future. Late first round picks aren’t usually future stars. There’s a rebuild coming and none of this matters. The core is their mid 30’s. Winning now is what matters.

So if that’s all true why does Nashville make this trade

Because that’s what rentals go for. You almost never get good value for the player you give up. It’s always a late first, prospect taken in the first round, and roster players or whatever.

Pettersson has actually been good this year and could use a bigger role. Kapanen is a classic reclamation project t.

Forsberg shouldn't net more than Giroux got.

Giroux and Hall last year are unique because they both could decide which team to go to.

Both are true! He’s been good on the second pairing for most of the season. But he doesn’t play Pk or PP so he’s the guy that came out of the lineup when Friedman was getting more of a look.

Now he’s in the third pairing with Matheson promoted to the top four.

Here’s why

Being a good player and getting less opportunity now is reason for a team to trade him and another team to want him.

So if he’s a bottom pair for you where do really think he’ll be in our lineup. I think poile will get a lot better package than that for forsberg. I think he’ll be looking for a lot better prospects instead of high picks. But I don’t think he’ll be traded soo

He's been second pairing all season until a few weeks ago on one of the better teams in the league and had great defensive underlyings while doing it.
