Canes pass

Zacha and Blackwood are of little interest. 1 year of retained severson would be nice but not for our goalie of the future that is getting Vas comparisons.

If you want to trade for Bear for that 2nd and 3rd, we could do that.

LaFontaine or Makiniemi I would consider trading, but Kochetkov with his performance coming over from the KHL has been incredible. Going 13-1-1 after coming to North America is an incredible achievement. Based on his performance alone I would say the Canes pass. Kochetkov has emerged as the potential goalie of the future for the Canes. Depending on what the decision on Raanta is for next season, I would not be surprised if 1) Raanta gets moved to give Kochetkov the backup role, or 2) he starts the season as the 3rd goalie much like Ned did with Mrazek and Reimer. I believe the Canes will likely opt for option 2, but I would not be surprised if the Canes were to go with running 3 goalies like last year.

The trade definitely feels like the Devils lose now by a massive margin, but in the future I would say the Devils would win. Severson is the biggest quality return in this trade in my opinion. Zacha has seemed inconsistent throughout his career, and would probably benefit from a change of scenery. As for Blackwood, I am not too sure about him being a true starter, as I have seen a few similarities to how Ned played with the Canes. Quite leaky at times, and when a save is desperately needed it isn’t always there. I like Blackwood, but whether or not he is better than Raanta right now is up to debate for me. Assuming Kochetkov is the real deal that will replace Andersen, I’m not sure the Canes do that. If it was for LaFontaine or Makiniemi, I would think the Canes make the move. But Kochetkov, I think has quickly become a piece that isn’t available for trade.

Yeah so, I built this trade that's its win-win (ish) for the Canes in that if he's actually looking like a starter, you get an addition 1st round pick. I understand he's an incredible prospect, which is why I give up so much for him here.

Considering the fact that he is getting Vasilevskiy comparisons, I would think the Canes would want guaranteed value over question marks. Zacha with his inconsistencies in scoring, Blackwood has similar inconsistencies to Ned, and Severson half retained for 1 year with no guarantee of him resigning, all red flags that the Canes should not make the trade.

How about I pose the question differently. What do you think the Devils would give up for Vasilevskiy, that would make Tampa consider accepting the trade? With Kochetkov garnering that kind of attention, that would be the question running through the Canes minds. Assuming Kochetkov is the next Vasilevskiy, and I say assuming cause there is no guarantee here, what would the Devils give up to force the Canes hands? I don’t think the Devils have enough to truly make the Canes seriously consider trading the next potential Vasilevskiy, without giving up a superstar.

That being said, this would all rely on Kochetkov truly becoming the next Vasilevskiy, so this should be taken with a grain of salt, since that is a tall order to undertake.

Yeah I mean, I'm sorry but that's not really a hypothetical worth considering. That's an insanely difficult feat to pull off. Can he do it? Maybe. But the Canes need to win /now/ right? So this gives them /at least/ two locks (Blackwood is fine when healthy) and a bunch of maybe's for two maybes (even if one of those maybes is the best maybe of the bunch).

Regardless, Devils fans are gonna reject this as too much and Canes fans are gonna reject it as too little. So that's fun and productive.

Nothing is as fun and productive as having 2 parties scream at you for not pleasing their idea on their players’ “true value.” Short term, the Canes win, but long term, in my opinion at least, the Canes lose big. I would say the Canes pass based on potential alone. I would think the Canes consider moving one of LaFontaine or Makiniemi, but Kochetkov I think is off limits now.
