No GM would trade Marner. Matthews and Tavares wouldn't be happy. He's a potential Hart candidate, a great set up guy. He might be the second best player taken in 2015.

Redoing the first two lines? No upgrade in net? No Gio?

Curious why these decisions.

In all fairness, you guys have serious cap issues. Only about 9 million to re-sign Campbell, Gio, Mikehyev, Engvall, Liljegren, and Lyubushkin if you want. Gonna lose some players for nothing it looks like.

He supposedly wants a Barclay Goodrow type contract. What is stopping him from asking for that?

Definitely going to lose someone or a few players. They can't compete on salaries. I would move Kerfoot, Nylander before Marner. Marner makes his teammates better.

Moving Nylander allows you to sign others. D will be the biggest challenge with Sandin, Liljgren, Gio, Lyubushkin, all needing contracts.

All this is compounded when a equal offer in many other US teams comes with a lot more take home money because of more competitive tax systems. Means you have to sign for more in Canada to take home the same.

Agreed. No doubt you would get a nice return for Nylander but then you'd have to not either take any salary back which would be difficult to get fair value for Nylander, or target a player w. a mid range salary and hope that little bit will be enough. Personally I think, if the Maple Leafs again fail to perform in the off season, it would take a major piece to be moved, and it really would come down to JT or Marner and it's not going to be JT. Moving Marner allows you to acquire players with higher AAV's that can spread the talent across the team. This also would help replenish your system with younger guys who don't have higher AAV's and picks. It's not an enviable position but if it's another first round loss or even a series win but then not getting past the second round, not sure if Dubas will even have a job, but a change will certainly have to be made. can't just run it back and hope for the best again, can you?
