you confuse odds and probability. probability is simply events divised by outcomes. go to a casino aswell or any gambling site, they talk about odds, not probability.
I’m not. You’re confusing the english language with something else. Just google it dude. There are online dictionaries. Or just sound it out. Probability….probable…hey we found a root word.
I’m guessing maybe you heard this in some intro to stats class or something like that, but missed the day on dependent and independent events, or mutually exclusive events, compound events, even complementary events.
What you think you’re doing is saying “flipping a coin has two events, heads or tails. 50:50. Same with a hockey series.” A coin flip is what is known in statistics as a “simple event.”
What you’re actually doing is saying (and this is a very hyperbolic example for effect): “If a feather and a pebble are dropped from a height of 10,000 feet, there is an equal probability that the feather or rock will hit the ground first. Two outcomes, one event. 50:50. I know gravity and aerodynamics don’t agree here, but maybe a bird is flying by at the exact same time and the rock lands on the birds back and is carried away.”
To which someone that understands simple events vs the other types of events listed would say, “uhhh, okay, go through the probabilities of that bird flying by at that exact time.”
