Core Growth + Defensive Depth = Atlantic Champs

Created by: RealGudPro

Description
Read the justification for the trades.

Everyone wants that stud RHD. If we act out of necessity and trade from a position of weakness there is no way we will come out on top.

The way I see it is that nearly everyone will be better next year. I expect serious growth from the big 3 and some progression and maturity from Rielly, Kadri, Zaitsev, Carrick and Kapanen. Along with Roman Polak+ aka Gudas, we will be an improved team. We see where the draft and expansion take us and go from there.

    Additional Details:
I know he is a good player, but looking at his injury history I don't think he is going to be successful long term. He just cannot stay healthy

    Additional Details:
Gudas was scratched some games and with the D Philly has coming up I think this makes sense from them. He is a Polak replacement for us, but better.

Hyman is finally not grossly overpaid for the first time. Brown that's a bit of a risk, I don't know if I want to go that far with him. Boyle is probably closer to $2.5M but that's fine, not completely out. Don't know why you don't want Curtis back as Freddy's backup, he was very good this year. Hunwick at $1M would be a steal, so no complaints. Leivo is not draft eligible that's called Eric Fehr, not sure why people can't get this.

I'm not sure if Gudas who has never played 20 minutes a night is your answer, but who knows. It isn't terrible, but it really isn't much of any improvement either.

Well Curtis just plain sucks. I mean he has been one of the worst NHL goalies nearly every year he has played. Sure, this year he was more than serviceable. But thats an anomaly most likely as I have trouble believing that he suddenly got good as a 30-something.

I'm not crazy high on Gudas, but I know Babcock would love him. And with his skills of getting the best out of players I think he could turn him into something better than he is in Philly.

I had no idea about Leivo, you're right. He did not play enough games.

I'm not sure Sparks is the answer at backup, but at the same time it is a back up, so it's not a major issue.

Still not don't think Gudas is anything the Leafs need or want. If he is a Polak replacement then you pay a 3rd pair d-man too much.

Take a look at his possession numbers, he is actually quite good. Not a bad **** suppressor either

Still doesn't change the fact he has done this in under 20 minutes a night. Leafs need a 25 minute a night guy.

Leivo seems like the logical pick for Vegas. He shouldn't be protected by Leafs, and he is an inexpensive guy with some upside. Dragongrave, I don't why you say Leivo is not eligible. Is is eligible. He's a fourth year pro, it doesn't matter if he has played the "minimum" amount of games. The point of exemption is that a team has to has a minimum number of player that meet the criteria. Doesn't mean that Vegas could draft most Marlies if they wanted too, even if they didn't qualify for the "NHL games total"
Hardly unlikely that the Leafs get too much help at RHD next year. Zaitsev, Carrick and Gudas might be the best lineup at RHD as you suggest.

Flyers fan here. I can tell you for sure you are not getting Gudas for that price. Not even close.

Gudas is a third pair d-man. What do you want for him? Nylander? Keep dreaming.

Where on earth did you get the idea that they'd want Nylander? Pretty big space between Nylander and Scrub + a 4th round pick.

Gudas Had a 53% CF, averaged over 19 minutes a night, had 23 pts and was a +8 on a mediocre Flyers team. He's a top 4 guy easily. Better than every D man on the leafs except Rielly and Gardiner
