22-23 Playoff Push

Created by: colazerrr

Initial Creation Date: May 2, 2022

Description
With the chemistry and comradery of this group, I feel as though only a few additions/changes will let them make the push for a WC spot.

Asplund has shown he is INCREDIBLY valuable on this team, with significant minutes. Give him Top 6 minutes and let him shut down opposing top lines.

Olofsson deserves to stay, and my mind won't be changed on that. He could even get more than what I have for him.

Quinn and Peterka both deserve spots. Peterka can still have an AHL/NHL year if needed, but I feel like time on the 4th let's him adjust at his own pace without much responsibility.

Treat the Taxi Squad players as AHL, with potential call-ups due to injuries.

Throw whatever money at MAF that he wants for 2 years. We have the room, and even at his age, his will push this team far.

Chychrun is my big want piece. It's rumored they want a high player, high prospect, and a 1st. I feel like 2 solid high prospects in Portillo and Johnson make up for the player being Bjork, but even he can be used effectively. Johnson becomes expendable due to Samuelsson growth, and I feel the team values Levi over Portillo.

Lastly, bring back Anderson as a goalie coach, and as I think they will be in playoff contention, perhaps make a deadline acquisition with a team in cap trouble as we have 15m+

Why are we giving away so many assets when we have a strong and young top 4 already?

Dahlin: 2018 1st OA
Samuelsson: 2018 32nd OA
Power: 2021 1st OA
Jokiharju: 2017 29th OA

If we make a move, look elsewhere

Agreed...I'd look to acquire 1 LHD and 1 RHD in free agency
With Dahlin moving to the right side I'd look at someone like Manson as 2RHD pairing
Might be pricey but Chariot would also bring some offense to the back end on the left side.
Not sure the Sabres would spend that much on 2 D-men.
It would give the Sabres the potential of 3 double digit goal scorers on the blue line.
Manson and Chariot also bring a little grit back there also.

But we have a set top 4 already??? Why trade that much for a position we are building from within at. The Manson signing is fine, but why go out and make a huge trade for a dman with OP, dahlin, mattias, joki

You have 3 LD in Dahlin, Power, and Samuelsson. They may try to switch Dahlin to the right, but there are no guarantees on that. So Johnson is the 4th LD on the depth chart. He is expendable. ARI wants a high player, high prospect, and 1st for Chychrun. My trade is around same value. Chychrun is the perfect RD to plug and play in Top 4, and is also cost controlled for 3 years, when players like Asplund, Krebs, Samuelsson, Power will need extensions. I like the idea of a grittier player, but if Chychrun is available, I think you do what you can to snag him.

Do YOU have a better idea to get rid of Bjork? (Actually, you did earlier!)

As much as I like Chychurn I gotta agree - with their current D Buffalo really doesn't need him. Wisest move is to get some veteran help that isn't going to cost any top prospects.

Did something happen where all of a sudden every LD can play RD? There is a reason NHL players stick to one side. Playing both is challenging. We are stacked at LD. Not all can see roster time, and Johnson is almost at that point. We need RD, and in my mind, this trade puts you at the best spot for a playoff push. You have to sacrifice pieces to get good players, end of story. This would be case and point.

Fair point - I'm not against giving up Johnson and the Vegas first for a good player with some term who can step in now (Portillo is probably sticking around until the team gets commitments from Levi is my guess).

What does the potential UFA market for RD look like?

They already moved dahlin to the right. He and Samuelsson played together since power joined the team

I didn't agree with the OP, I agreed to the comment made by @littlejerryseinfeld...I would go the free agency route which is what I suggested
