Ask yourself if he’ll be worth that much money in year 3-7 of that deal. His age 32-36 seasons.

Sure. Chicago fans know that when they paid out a huge contract to Hossa and they got 3 cups out of it

Didn’t they do that already with Dougie?

Don’t sign the best UFA and a top 10 player in the league? That’s a weird thing to not want

He isn’t a top 10 player in the league! It’s debatable if he’s even a top 10 defenceman right now

Which others? How many times has a player who did finished second in scoring hit free agency? There are plenty of bad contracts you can point to that weren’t justified but none of them are this situation

Then you heard from some people who were living in lala land because Dougie Hamilton never was a top 10 player in the entire league.

And Chicago paying out a huge contract to Hossa at the same age sure was a bad idea by that logic, but I’d take those 3 cups and happily be where they are now. It’s about winning and Johnny is a big game player. The Flames have very few of them too but he is one. Whoever gets him is going to be lucky and the Devils have some really young skilled players. This team is going to be good very soon but the question is how good? Where would Chicago have been without Hossa? We don’t know but I bet their glad they have those 3 cups and he was a huge part of it.

And if the league changes the rules back to when you could sign a guy on a backloaded 12 year contract to keep the cap hit down to that of a mediocre second liner….by all means do it. But they won’t, so this is a bad idea.

It’s not though? Whether it’s 12 years or 6/7 years at a higher cap hit the money is the money. It doesn’t change.

And?

Maybe I misunderstood. Was saying he deserves his money over Gaudreau because he’s younger and will be worth it for the whole contract.

Lol what? Who the hell cares about the money. The money isn’t the money. The cap is the cap. One thing is finite, the other is theoretically unlimited. Hossa signed for ballpark 9% of the salary cap. This deal is what? 14.5%?

Unless you’re an owner you shouldn’t give a crap about salary.

The person who cares about the money is the person who matters the most in the whole conversation, the player. You make the cap work if the player is good enough and this is one of those rare players.

Right. So in Hossas case, the team made the money more than the cap hit. You can’t do that anymore. That’s why its a really bad example. The rules changed.

The contract proposed here is 84 million with an 82.5 million cap.

Hossas deal was 63 million with a 56 million dollar cap. Higher pay, right? Except one guys % of the cap was 9%, and the other is 14.5%. See how its a completely different conversation?
