Moving McDavid to stack the team

Created by: Rob32sjsharks

Description
Just to clarify i am not an Oilers fan so don’t hate too much.
Trading McDavid would be crazy, but it would set the team up pretty well for next year and Down the road.
Draisaitl Suzuki isn’t the 1-2 punch McDavid Draisaitl is but it’s still a good 1-2 punch.
adding the draft picks allows the Oilers to bolster their prospect pool and make deals as needed.
first deal is moving Duncan Kieth back to Chicago so he can retire there,
next we package Harris from the Montreal trade with Barrie and Kassian combined with the 1st overall Floridas 1st in 2023 along with the Oilers 2nd for Chychrun and the 3rd overal.
Arizona gets to draft Wright gets a good young D prospect and 2 short term but still good players in Barrie and Kassian.
with the 3rd overal Oilers have Nemec or Jiricek to choose from, Jiricek has better size and an NHL ready body but Nemec has more offensive upside. either way Oilers get a top 4RD. Here i opt for Jiricek because he can play on the 3rd pairing right away.
If klefbom retires due to the shoulder Oliers keep Kieth.
the only weak spot in this lineup is Goalie, But smith is a decent Backup and Mentor and Skinner showed good flashes and deserves a shot. with 2.5 mil in cap ends up being 9-10 at the deadline and allows Oilers to trade for a legit starter if Smith or Skinner can’t cut it.
team still has elite top end talent and also is deep with a deeper prospect pool going into the year. team will be almost as good as last year and has a chance to sustain that for the next 4-5 plus years.

Surely EDM would want more.

That to me is undervalued. I know its a 1OA but this is McDavid we are talking about.

Needs to have a quality player returning also.

the 1st overal is worth 2+ 1sts, Harris is a 1st quality prospect plus the other 1st and 2 2nds means your getting
4-1st in value plus 2 2nds and Suzuki is a very young top line C

Have to agree here. Doubt McDavid would waive his NMC to go to MTL when they are clearly not in a win-now mode. Also, return for McDavid would likely be prohibitive for almost every team. Only trades that seem viable would be with COL for Makar plus, to TOR for Matthews plus/Marner++, etc. I could see McDavid wanting to play in TOR, or for a strong contender like COL or TBL if he ever moved (very doubtful). If the MTL trade happened (in an alternate universe where McDavid was born in MTL and wanted to go home), I would say the minimum return would be Suzuki + Caufield + 4 first round picks. McDavid is the best player by a wide margin, so his trade value at only 25 years old would be quite steep.

McDavid basically scores as much as 2 elite level NHL players combined (an elite player who scores 70-80 pts would easily go for two 1st round picks+, so multiply this by at least two) and he makes his line-mates significantly better while doing so. His ceiling is likely 150+ pts in a full season and we just saw him score 33 pts in 16 games in the playoffs. Would we really be surprised if he hit 160 pts (50G , 110A) in a season? The guy would command pretty much every asset a team has to offer in a trade. I'd say the minimum is four 1st round draft picks plus an elite player and a prospect. Yes, you can argue that even The Great One (Gretzky) was traded back in the day, but that was for very different reasons (financial, mostly). As a hockey fan, I would love to see a McDavid trade, especially to a bigger hockey market.

i’m providing a reasonable offer here, no player ever including the great one in his prime is worth what you mentioned above, it would be suicide! it would take 3-5 years just to dig out of the hole created by the loss. my deal is one that benifit a both sides, but yea another top prospect might be logical.

fair, and he’s paid like 2 elite players as well!
Suzuki scored 60 last season and on Oilers plus him comming into his prime could easily be 80 points, add the 1st overal and you have another elite player, combine that with another 1st and 2 2nds and that’s most likely 2 more solid players and Harris is a top 4 guy in the making.
so you have 2 top 6 C 1 top 4 D and another 3 picks to make the difference.

I don’t know if this is enough to get the McDavid deal done but at least you put some thought into this v lobbing up a cap dump that nets you assets Maybe swap out McDavid for Draisitl

It's not really a reasonable offer. No team is really capable of putting together a prospect/pick combination to match his value. This would have to be more of a hockey trade, with NHL players (plus prospects and picks) going to Edmonton. I hate when people say things like "draft picks are just lottery tickets," but in this case, you're not giving up the best player in the world for a bunch of unproven assets.

funny thing is i value Draisaitl more than McDavid. both are Elite but Draisaitl is 4 mil cheaper and that nets you a top 4 D or middle 6 winger to bolster your depth chart.

that is a fair comment, but when trading the best player in any sport you never truly get what he is worth so i am looking at what kind of deal hurts the least and sets the team up to be good if not better without him! and with this trade you get a legit top 6 C who is 23 and capable of 70-80 points a season. with the other assets you Utelize them to move a few players that eat up a lot of cap and don’t factor into your 5 year plan and pick up one of the best LD available in Chychrun. and still have the 3rd overall to grab the best D available in this draft.
so with all the Deals McDavid essential becomes Suzuki Chychrun and Jiricek. Suzuki will cover about 55% of what McDavid provided but Chychrun and Jiricek solidify the D with Nirse for the next 5+ years and make it so you don’t have to win 6-5 5-4 every night!
If i was an Oilers fan I wouod HATE this deal! but as a non fan this gives your team a better shot at the cup.
