Sorry trades like you have suggested are rarely done. Since most trades are done with teams who have cap issues, it's dollar for dollar trades.
For Arizona, instead of giving up two good assets, wouldn't they just sign 6.5m worth of players and be better off instead of trading for 6.5m Stefan? The other option Arizona or Carolina or some team with might take Stefan but are not enthralled with his contract makes the following deal. Stefan and Miller for a third rounder. Or Stefan and 1st rounder for a 7th rounder. What choice do what your team have, keep Stefan, can't afford to resign Smith and still be over the cap.

Will a team like Arizona ever be relavent by continuing to basically be an AHL team? I realize it is their prerogative to manage their roster any way they want to but how sad for numerous other teams who actually want to compete in the NHL but are stymied by the cap. Carolina is trending upward so that is a good thing.

Arizona might look into Step. His average remaining salary is less than his cap hit.

Graderman: I would like Arizona to improve and getting Stepan would help them. I'm just saying they aren't giving up good assets to get him, since no other team would. Rangers might have to treat Stepan like a UFA and basically let him walk for nothing, if the Rangesrs want $$$$ to sign other players.
