Setting the team for a potential 2024 playoffs participation

Created by: Momz
Team: 2022-23 Ottawa Senators
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 20, 2022
Published: Jun. 20, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
This team is better than last year's Sens. I doubt they make the playoffs but I think they can play meaningful hockey until March at least. I'm doing this for the following season.

Holden, Del Zotto, Hamonic, Watson, Gambrell leaving after this year and a Matt Murray buyout in a year would save the Sens $12.55M for the 2023/24 season. More to sign your RFAs and you have money to get into the UFA market.

This year Forsberg is the starter, more like 1A and Murray 1B hopefully to let him play and who knows, gain some kind of value. I thought about a buyout but it would be 2.5M penalty over 4 years which would hurt the team in YR3 and YR4 as it would probably be competitive. Wait a year and either trade him or buy him out at a more stomachable price/term.

Also hope that one of Docker or Thomson develops this year to take Zaitsev's spot.

Trades
1.
OTT
  1. 2022 2nd round pick (NYI)
Additional Details:
The Sens are definitely not gonna re-sign a 29yo UFA in Brown especially with the RFAs coming. Main purpose of this trade is to get out of that White deal.
ARI
  1. Brown, Connor
  2. White, Colin
  3. 2022 3rd round pick (BOS)
Additional Details:
A pick for a pick. A round difference yes but you also get a Connor Brown who averages 50pts/82GP for the last 3 seasons. A vet that can help the youngsters, the cap to get you over the salary floor and you have the same amount of picks in the draft. AZ still not gonna be done with their rebuild by the time White's contract is up
2.
OTT
  1. Fiala, Kevin [RFA Rights]
Additional Details:
Would I do this if I was OTT, no. But more than 1 source are saying that the Senators are one if not the main suitors for Fiala. According to the Wild ''Athletic'' reporter, the asking price is a 1st and a prospect,
MIN
  1. Lodin, Viktor
  2. 2022 1st round pick (OTT)
  3. 2022 5th round pick (OTT)
Additional Details:
You are likely not gonna re-sign him, you gotta keep in mind that Boldy's contract is up next year and you have to keep some flexibility for eventual FAs too.
The market will also see some prolific UFAs. Teams would just spend money rather than trade assets before spending money to sign Fiala. If the market was more barren then the price would be significantly higher.
3.
OTT
  1. Kubalik, Dominik [RFA Rights]
Additional Details:
Taking a chance on a 26yo player that is over half a PPG and that needs a fresh start for only a 3rd ? I'd do it
CHI
  1. 2022 3rd round pick (OTT)
Additional Details:
It seems that the Hawks, who look like they want to prepare for a rebuild have given up on the player.

Underpay on Norris, Kubalik might not even get qualified, no interest in Fiala at that price

You’re at least $2M and 3 years short on Norris.

Out of all the active players that have signed a contract between 22-24yo the average AAV for a similar production is 5.5M to 6.5M, choose an AAV between that (ok give him 6M/yr). The Hawks would be dumb to not qualify him. Even if they don’t I’d still pick Kubalik up.

Finally the Fiala trade is more of a gamble. I’d understand not trading for him. But everywhere they are rumoured to be the main favourites. You also had 5 1sts in the last 3 years it is not like you are lacking of young guys to develop. Remove the late pick if you want but I’d do a 1st (that would take 1/2 years to show up) and a mid round pick

2M too short? Go on the CapFriendly tool. Select active players that signed around 22/23/24yo and look at the AAV for Norris’ production. 7M+ ? He has the potential but I think it could go badly. We see player taking good money on short deal to get even more later.

Were these players wingers or centers? The comparable is Jack Hughes so Norris for anything less than 8 million is great deal. Centers are more valuable than wingers
