aggressive offseason

Description
Don't fix what isn't broken on the 1st line.
Reports say pens are further away on Malkin than Letang so I believe pens re-sign Letang and let Geno walk. They sign Trochek to replace him and re-sign Rakell and Heinen to make a solid 2nd line.
Carter wasn't bad to start the season and picked it up for the playoffs a bit. I think he would benefit more from having players that excel at carrying the puck into the zone and shoot while he creates a center lane drive and is the big body in front of the net deflecting pucks. That's where Zucker and Nylander come in respectfully.
fourth line are fast energy guys that don't mind throwing the body.
First d pair is abiding by the rule 'don't fix what isn't broken'
Matheson is best when given a very defensive minded d partner so why not give him one of the best.
poj did best when paired with Marino. Also gives him a solid defensive d so that he can have confidence to do his thing in the offensive zone.
fleury is a great backup that is also insurance.
gmrh has said guys like Zohorna, oconnor, bjorkqvist, nylander, poj, puustinen, hallinder, and poulin could have a real good chance at making the roster out of camp. I'd bet the players that would be subject to waivers have the best shot and the others are injury call ups

Detroit accepts, Players useful.

According to Pierre Lebrun Ron Hextal offered Kris Letang $8,000,000 x 3 years and he turned it down as he wants 5 years. So he's not taking less to stay there in Pittsburgh.

They're only plugs until the kids are ready, Kapanen would be a fine 2nd line RW for now. Not sure if Pettersson makes it if Edvinsson becomes our 2nd pairing LD he's obviously not a top pairing guy and is too expensive for a bottom pairing LD.

Reports also say Letang could take anywhere between $7.5M-8M to stay in Pittsburgh. It could be that Hextall is trying to offer the max of said report of money to Letang in order for him to sign the 3 year deal. But I do doubt Letang accepts the same amount of AAV of his previous contract.

Pettersson is a solid defensive defencemen. It’s honestly crazy seeing how much mixed reports there are of his value. He’s been a fine defencemen but he is offensively not that good. I’m still a bit stumped as to why Sully changed things up when Marino and Pettersson were a fine shutdown duo. But looking at it now I think it’s because of how offensively deficient they were together and Sully could’ve just been trying to get more offence from the defence. But it did come at the sacrifice of Pettersson’s playing time.

Pettersson is rock solid defensively with great puck control and is exactly what Detroit needs to pair with Hronek to help him out with his deficiencies. We're happy to take him.

I still think Pittsburgh can get more value than a 3rd though. But considering the cap more and more, we might just have to take a 3rd.

LD are a dime a dozen this summer with so many teams in cap hell. PIT have three young defenders losing their waiver exemption this summer and needs to shed cap and WPG is in the exact same situation. Neither team have any option other than accept what they're given. With VGK and two or three other teams also looking to dump LD on the market there's no chance of a bidding war. The teams with both cap available and also roster spots open are a lot fewer than the teams looking to get rid of defenders.

Detroit is obviously going to exploit other team's misfortune as much as it's possible.

those players don't make them any worse either. the idea is that you could probably plug Kap into a top 6 role and he gets back to his game and you can turn a profit on him at the tdl or offseason. MP is a solid shutdown guy that would be perfect to pair with Hronek or Sieder. if in two years he gets bumped out by the younger guys and you get at least a 3rd round pick, then it's a win in him too. Otherwise he is a fail safe if multiple young guys don't plan out

I think he would take less to stay here if he got 4-5 years. Reports are that it isn't salary it is just a heads thing. I wouldn't mind a 4-5 years at 7.5-8 per year. especially if we could sign lyubushkin for a bit cheaper

Honestly $7,000,000 x 4-5 years is a fair offer, it's not like he hasn't made his money over the course of his career or anything.
