Wings decline, trading Suter for weight doesn’t help the center depth.

The 2023 draft is deep in talent. The downgrade in talent at 2C for 1 year when Detroit likely still won't be competing for a playoff spot next year anyways is worth it. Pius Suter is better than Monahan but he's not the long term solution at 2C. That's likely coming in this years draft with the possibility to grab Matt Savoie or Cutter Gauthier at #8

I don’t disagree, but if Detroit is out of playoff contention at the TDL, I feel like trading Suter then would net more than Calgary’s 1st with protection. Look at what middle 6 centers have cost recently at the TDL

SY can not intentionally build a worse team this year then last and actually hope to keep Larkin, bert, vrana, seider or raymond around long term.

Good players will not choose to play with bad players forever

A quality 2C could be signed as a UFA this summer to take Suters spot. Taking Monahan for 1 year when the cap space is available to acquire another 1st in a deep draft is worth it. Trocheck or Strome would be the targets. Monahan could be the 3C or 4C...or even play the whole year out in GR for all I care.

Seider and Raymond are on ELC deals and they are RFA's after that. They're going to be around for a while anyways. Larkin likely won't be going anywhere. He's a Detroit kid and the captain of the Red Wings living out his dream. He's committed until the end. Vrana and Bert might be harder sells but once talent like Edvinsson, Berggren, Cossa, Wallinder, whoever the 2022 1st pick is, start coming in, this team will be rising up in 2023 and have two firsts that year. The rebuild will be getting a huge boost right near the end. and if Bert and Vrana both wanted out they can both be traded for very good returns.

Wings take this all day, not sure what anyone is complaining about. Veleno is good enough to play 3C over suter, we take mono for 1 year Hoping he bounces back and get something for him at the deadline and get a 1st rounder in a super deep draft. This is lunacy anyone from a wings side saying no

Exactly. If Monahan has half a decent year he could be flipped with 50% retained at the deadline for more draft picks in 2023. Likely a 3rd or 4th range. Suter isn't the long term answer at 2C so why bother holding onto him when Detroit could get another 1st in a deep draft. Monahan is only on the books for 1 year and is gone next summer. Detroit will play a combination of Larkin, Veleno, Rasmussen, Gagner and Monahan down the middle. Possibly even sign a UFA like Strome and just bury Monahan in the minors if he sucks and is a total liability. They've got the cap space to pull off these kinds of moves now before Larkin, Seider, Raymond get their pay days.
