The crunch

Created by: Johnny_G13
Team: 2018-19 Edmonton Oilers
Initial Creation Date: May 12, 2017
Published: May 12, 2017
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
With the contracts of the two big guys, Oilers will have to let maroon walk and I'm sure they won't re sign Russell either.

The oilers will also do whatever they can to get rid of the Eberle contract, and Arizona may be one of the rare teams willing to take a chance on him at that cap hit.

I think you are selling Eberle extremely low. Has his value really diminished that much?

Yea I do think after these playoffs his value has plummeted and if chiarelli wants to keep his core he HAS to get rid of the Eberle contract, maybe the oilers can get slightly more but there won't be many suitors to take on a 6 mill cap hit for a risky player like him.

In the eyes of the mob, yes. It's sad, but Edmonton's fans just love to run somebody out of town. Assets like Schultz and Hall can thus be acquired for less than their actual value. Other GM's love Edmonton's fan mob.

Too much money spent on McDavid, and Draisatl. You talked about Eberles contract. Look at Ebs & Drai's ELC years.

    Eberle- 156 points, 195 games
    Draisaitl- 137 points, 191 games

I don't think McDavid would expect that much, depending on next season ofcourse. I hope the Oilers will be more careful with money and term under Chiarelli.

How in the ..... is he risky. 50+ points every uninterrupted season. Defensively he could be better, but Jesus. The Eberle bashing is very disappointing. Especially now the media is on board to feed the monster and get more readers, social media followers, and ratings.

Totally agree, I would even try to sign both to bridge contracts (Drai 3 years, $5 million; McDavid 4 years, $8 million).

I would try to move Eberle to the NYI for Harmonic, maybe including a draft pick. Would help both teams.

No he doesn't. That's a commonly held fallacy amongst Oilers fans, that one of either Nugent-Hopkins or Eberle has to go for cap reasons. Let's look at other contracts that should be / will be eliminated this summer:

    Fayne: $2.6MM cap hit
    Pouliot: $4MM
    Desharnais: $2.8MM
    Hendricks: $1.85MM
    Russell: $3.1MM
    Ference: $3.25MM

That's $15.75MM that Chiarelli can shed without touching any skill forwards. I'm not saying that he shouldn't trade Eberle, but he certainly doesn't HAVE to.

A couple of things come to mind. First, I think 2nd contracts weight the most recent season more than the entire ELC, and Draisaitl has been amazing this year - especially in the second half of the season and the playoffs. I don't think Chiarelli will bridge him, and a 8 x $6.75MM contract seems reasonable at this point. 10 weeks ago, not so much.

I think McDavid's extension will happen this summer, even though it doesn't kick in until the following season. They're allowed to sign the extension as of July 1st, I think it'll be Chiarelli's first order of business. Therefore, McDavid's performance next year will have no bearing on the contract at all. And while it's hard to argue that McDavid isn't worth every penny of $12MM+, I have a feeling that he'll ask for less (8 x $9.7MM is a popular number) a la Crosby.

Hamonic would be a good choice. He's a similar player to Larsson, I think - lots of shutdown ability. As long as he's healthy, of course.
