Well, then Draisaitl would be a steal (29).

IMO Chiarelli made a big mistake, he should (and could) have signed Draisaitl at the start of his 3rd season to a 6 to 8 years contract somewhere between $6 and $7 million

The Leafs should wait until the Av's sign Rantanen and judge Marner to that contract standard. Rantanen and Marner are the closet to being equals as any players.</div></div>
Draisaitl got the money because of 16 points in 13 playoff games.

Same with Draisaitl in Edmonton, he wouldn´t be the leader they need.

Well, I think he wants to win some cups and 1M less for a cup will not hurt him. After the bridge contract they would offer him 8y in the range 10.5 - 11.5M

Nice deal, RNH is not a true #1 center but he would help Montreal a lot. And Drouin would help Edmonton a lot as a first line winger and they might be able to put Drais on the second line.
If they could resign RNH, he would be their future #2 center.

Leon Locked Up
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Caletti12</b></div><div>Not 100% sure Chiarelli knows what he's doing here. He should know that after paying McDavid 12.5M per, Drasaitl's deal had to be more team friendly than this. He'll have the 9th biggest AAV among all skaters this season and he's had one good (albeit very good) year. The number should have been 7-7.5M. I don't think making a guy the highest paid player ever by 2M, then overpaying another by 1M is good business. Chicago hasn't made it out of the 1st round since Toews and Kane signed their big deals, and Bowman has by all accounts done a fairly masterful job of keeping them competitive even with the financial burden. Chiarelli isn't on the same level as Bowman and it will be interesting to see how he manages them going forward. They better win the cup this year, because after that they'll be in salary cap hell.</div></div>
I totally agree with your point of view. PC could have saved some money, if he signed Leon last season or even this season, but before signing Connor. Maybe even Connor would have been signed a little cheaper, if he saw that Leon signd for, lets say, $7.5 million.

grovercleveland and Dylan1995, yes it is correct that this McDavid deal is very good in lets say 4 or 5 years. Yes, McDavid would ask for lets say $14 million in 5 years.
But the cap will be much higher then (I think + $83 million), so this 14 million would be much easier to handle.
And you would have, if you could have signed Drai to a 3 year bridge contract, much more money left for good guys in 18/19 and 19/20.
In my opinion they have only this year for a SC run, because next year with both guys signed to big contracts you don´t have enough money left.
And please, don´t tell me, CP can trade RNH, you have other guys to be paid and why should these guys play for less than they are worth.

These things look very nice, but I doubt that you can sign Drai for these terms. If PC offered him this contract during the last season until march, Drai wouldn´t even think about denying such an offer. After the playoffs he still might have signed this offer, but not after PC signed CMD for $100 million. IMO PC made several mistakes during signing his two top centers, first Leon last year, maybe even to a 3 year bridge contract worth $13.5 to $15 million and Connor this year to a 4 year bridge deal between $39 and max $45 million.

How would this team do in the NHL?
Bottom 5 of the league. The biggest problem would be no starting goalie. Neither Montoya nor Brossoit would play more than 20 games on a good level. D is not so bad, with the additon of a top 4 D this would be a real nice and cheap D. The O is not really bad, but some of these guys have to show that they are worth the contracts they have signed.

You did compair Leon to both actually. And I get it.. I thought he would be in the 6.5 - 7m range before the playoffs myself. Then every playoff game I watched was bitter sweet. At times he was moved from CMD line to center Lucic and Slepy.. and killed it. He has in fact proven he can not only play Center, but also RW at a high level while floating around the line up and being in top 10 in scoring. He out played CMD in the playoffs.. he will get paid.
On another note Green needs to be an Oiler next year, would be a great add.</div></div>
First I would like to apologize to everybody for the tone of my comments - this issue gets me riled up, not at you guys but at the narrative surrounding these players in the MSM. People at THN / Sportsnet etc should know better, but they're framing the arguments in (IMO) an unbalanced manner. We all read / watch these sources, so some of it comes up here too.
To you specifically, Styled, I would like to point out that Draisaitl's playoff performance is not repeatable. He got hot, he got lucky, and oh what a joy it was to watch! But if you analyse the numbers, that Lucic-Draisaitl-Slepyshev line got killed in possession / shot metrics and the like, and instead went on an unprecedented and unrepeatable PDO tear. Both the shooting percentage and the save percentage of that line was unsustainably high. IMO it doesn't prove much except that Leon is a very talented young player. Could Gaudreau or Scheiflele or MacKinnon go on a similar tear for a couple of weeks? You bet they could. I doesn't mean that they should be paid like Malkin though. A bridge deal (even a one-year contract) would give us a much more accurate picture of who Draisaitl is as a player (without the McDavid tailwind), and then he should be paid accordingly. If that means $8MM per year, then great. But at this point I don't believe Draisaitl has proved himself to be worth any more than the Sheifele / Monohan / Barkov / Gaudreau / MacKinnon crowd.</div></div>
No problem. I totally agree with the bridge contract but in my opinion one year would be to short. At least two years and if Drai isn´t to much money focused he would accept 2 years for $10.5 totally.

Draisaitl sheet - creative use of Grabo LTIR - JT ext
If you want to offer sheet Drai you have to give between$8.75 to $9.25 million per year on a 5 year contract. This would be an offer, Edmonton would think about not to match.
Chia put himself in a bad position after saying that he first will fix the McDavid contract. This isn´t possible until July 1. and I think there will be several offer sheets for Leon.
But IMO Leon doesn´t want to leave Edmonton. They are two or three pieces away from being a real contender and a cup winner.

Maximum years you could offer would be 7. The only way you would get Drai for 2 first, 1 second and 1 third would be an offer like $8.5 to $9.25 million for a 5 year contract. I think that Edmonton wouldn´t match such an offer.

I would really like to see RNH in an Habs jersey, but i`m not so sure about Eberle. The resigning of Beaulieu will cost at least $2.5 million because of arbitration.
Edmonton doesn´t need another LHD in Beaulieu, you might have to offer Juulsen.
But I think, a trade like this could make sence for both sides.

Too much money spent on McDavid, and Draisatl. You talked about Eberles contract. Look at Ebs & Drai's ELC years. With the saved money they can sign another 1st/2nd line winger.
Eberle- 156 points, 195 games
Draisaitl- 137 points, 191 games
I don't think McDavid would expect that much, depending on next season ofcourse. I hope the Oilers will be more careful with money and term under Chiarelli.</div></div>
Totally agree, I would even try to sign both to bridge contracts (Drai 3 years, $5 million; McDavid 4 years, $8 million).
I would try to move Eberle to the NYI for Harmonic, maybe including a draft pick. Would help both teams.
Maybe they can sign another 1st/2nd line winger with the money they saved.
