Short answer, who cares. Times change. GM's mentalities change. Players mentalities change.

Marner could very well not be worth "X" but he may still push for it and still get it.

Draisaitl is lazy. Marner is one of the hardest workers on every shift.

Sometimes Draisaitl looks uninspired, couldn´t say much about Marner.

Things Dubas doesn’t GAF about:

-Who Marner wants to use as a comparable

He’s an RFA with no arb rights. He will sign or sit or maybe play somewhere else. That depends on what he wants to do. If he wants to be a Leaf and keep all his endorsements he will meet dubas in the middle. They will find a term and aav that both sides can live with.

I mean c’mon nylander tried to use Draisaitl as a comparable and look where that got him.

"Bob McKenzie says on TSN1050 that Marner's camp doesn't care about other winger comparables. Paraphrasing: If Rantanen came out and signed 9-9.5M long term, Mitch Marner would come out and say "who cares? Pay me like Matthews""

"If you don't pay me, I'm not showing up to camp" - Bob on Marner

What is Dubas going to do? I guess you pay him or sit him out.

Also, you don't lose your endorsements... I had to watch Nylander's Smoothie commercials all season

Every NHL player should sign long term deals based on what number they wear on their jersey. So Marner is worth 9.3 (his OHL #), Kappy is worth 2.4 and Johnsson is worth 1.8 million, Sign the contracts up and be done with it.

Well, then Draisaitl would be a steal (29).

Draisaitl wasn’t the best player on the team. Marner is and he just saw his team pay 2 players that he outperformed this year ( 3 years for Matthews) for 11M and 11.64M.

Marner's agent will get fired if this keeps dragging on, despite what the notion may be, Marner loves the Leafs and wants to stay; he'll have his agent turn down any other teams OS to keep talking with the Leafs. I feel bad for Mitch, the kid is awesome but now, just like Nylander (forever nicknamed MElander now thanks to his agent and dad), Marner's agent (and dad) are ruining his public image too.

Watch some Oilers games, than you'll see why he's lazy. He is half the age of Jagr but plays the same game as the 44 year old does.

Lol, it sounds like you're in Denial...

And the only way his agent gets fired is if he doesn't get Marner a big fat contract... That's his job. Behind every bad contract is a really good agent.

Yes. And Nylander went from one of the prized 3 Amigos on the team, than his agent and dad turned him into public enemy #1 in Toronto, which toke a huge effect on his game.

Making Marner public enemy #2 next season?

Nylander was in a tough spot. He had to set a precedent for the other "2 Amigo" and the rest of the league. All the players are in the same boat - they want to get paid.

You can't hate a player for wanting to make money.

I hate the new RFA standards, it wasn't long ago that rarely did a superstar player got any more than 6 million after their ELC expired. T. Hall, Toews, Kane, Tavares, McKinnon, Scheifele and even Kucherov couldn't crack the crazy amounts being talked about now. Stamkos, Ovie, Crosby and Malkin were the only guys who did.

I know..........

The RFA standards changed after the McDavid contract! Every RFA before him had reasonable contracts - Ehlers, Pasternak, Mckinnon.

Honestly, it's terrible timing for the Leafs... Having 3 stars up for contracts

Crosby signed for 14.5% of the cap. Prorated to an 82 million dollar cap thats a contract worth 11.89 million. So only Mcdavid ever signed for more than Crosby based on cap percentage, as it should be smile Thanks again for helping use my own logic to help prove my own point

watch, they're going to push for either 4 year ELCs, or you're a group 1 RFA until after 4 years of service or something. changes are coming, and its for the kids.

I like an idea of a player and his agent can accept today's standard 3 year ELC or sign a 5 year ELC which will have a higher cap max amount. That could give a NHL team the chance of keeping their superstar rookie on a cheaper deal, though high risk/reward idea (imagine the Oilers handing out a 5 year ELC for a bust like Pontypool)

https://www.capfriendly.com/browse/active/2020/caphit-percent&display=caphit-percent&hide=caphit

This referring to the Crosby comment. Anyone who truly understands the salary cap knows that percentages of cap are how contracts are decided, not just by the actual salary. It account for cap inflation and discrepancies over contracts signed 4 years ago being compared to current contracts.

Back in Crosby's signing of that contract, NHL teams nor player agents used the new age Cap Hit Percentile math like they do now. Crosby and his agent signed the 8.7 million contract solely on the purpose of it matching his jersey #. That's a fact, so you'll find no help to prove your point on that one.

Marner should fall somewhere in the 11%-12% of cap range, assuming an 82 million cap thats somewhere between 9-9.8 million. Which is exactly what he will sign for IMO.

I kind of like the idea of a forced bridge. You know how McAvoy is a group 1 RFA this year, so he can't sign an offer sheet. Let's make that happen for every player. your ELC is up after 3 years, but you can't sign an offer sheet for 2 more years after that. If your McDavid, and your team wants to lock you up for 8 anyway, so be it. If you're Nylander and you can't come to terms, well, you don't have that leverage so you get a 2 year deal at 3 million per. Maybe there's some sort of guideline based on points for a 2 year deal or something. I do like the idea of the young guys having to pay their dues for another year or two though.

It`s not about wether or not agents thought about that back then. That`s how they think about it now. Is what percent of the cap should a player eat up. Cuz you can argue that Mcdavid is worth 20 million dollars, but does spending 25% of your available budget on one guy make sense? No. Everything is relevant to the cap, and only a moron would not realize that.

Make it a forced arbitration signing if you aren't signed by October 1st or something the year after your ELC is up. I like that.
