Now everyones going to say "well Draisatl is underpaid" fair enough. Say Draisatl gets paid the 10.5-11 a year he deserves, Marner still should be signed for less. Case closed.

thats a silly question. It's like saying, "should matt duchene get more than patrice bergeron?" Well, hard no, but he's certainly going to.

Doesn't matter what everyone thinks.

Marner is worth whatever he wants to be worth... And he wants to be compared to Matthews!

The Nylander camp used the Draisaitl contract against the Leafs and now the Leafs are going to use the Draisaitl contract against Marner, oh the irony.

Wrong.

I'm using cap percentages. When Beregeron signed his deal it was 10.69% of the cap. Factoring inflation to 82 million, Bergerons contract is worth 8.75. Which i would use the same logic I did for Marner. Duchene should sign for under 8.75.

But the two cases are different in the fact that duchene is UFA and Marner is RFA. UFA's get overpaid, RFA's don't. Thanks for helping me prove my point and allowing me to apply my same logic to a different scenario smile

you're entirely missing the point. I would agree with you 100% if Matthews was still an RFA. He isn't. They signed him to a wacky contract, and that's all that really matters now.

Also Duchene is 100% getting 9+

Remember this; Draisaitl only scored 77 points in his final ELC year, Marner had 94 points. How do you compare those numbers ?

The Leafs should wait until the Av's sign Rantanen and judge Marner to that contract standard. Rantanen and Marner are the closet to being equals as any players.

It's pretty simple, Marner is going to say, "I've made a bigger impact than this guy the last couple years, and you just gave him 11.634 for 5 years. Give me that." center goal scorer bigger blah blah blah, they get him for an extra year at 500K less.

Things that Mitch Marner doesn't GAF about:

Things Dubas doesn’t GAF about:

-Who Marner wants to use as a comparable

He’s an RFA with no arb rights. He will sign or sit or maybe play somewhere else. That depends on what he wants to do. If he wants to be a Leaf and keep all his endorsements he will meet dubas in the middle. They will find a term and aav that both sides can live with.

I mean c’mon nylander tried to use Draisaitl as a comparable and look where that got him.

Dubas laughs and sends him packing... Matthews is far better. Franchise 1C that scores better than anyone in the league even with sub par line mates.

I don't think he'll sit. Reason being, I think there's something like a 30K a day penalty if you re-sign your RFA after the season starts. It's something like that, and it's one of the reasons nylanders cap number was so big last season. Last year the leafs could absorb that. This year, they can't. If he isn't signed a week after the season starts, he's gone. Deadlines are far more crucial in this negotiation.

Draisaitl got the money because of 16 points in 13 playoff games.

That is the exact reason why marner will not want to sit. He will lose his daily cap hit (base salary only) every day he sits.

Yes nylanders cap hit looked big last season but it was pro rated. The actual cap charge was only 6.96m. This is how leafs were able to pay performance bonuses.

Welcome to the new NHL, RFA's are no longer slaves, they're getting comparable contract to the older guys now. Which is what the NHL CBA must create a loophole, these ELC guys going from 1- 3 million cap hit (when include bonus paid out) to hitting the jackpot on year 4 and breaking the bank with 800% raise. All these NHL teams that are in Cap Hell is to be blamed on this factor.

Than he followed that up with a 70 point Year 4 total, still not a stud number like Marner's 94 point Year 3.

watch, they're going to push for either 4 year ELCs, or you're a group 1 RFA until after 4 years of service or something. changes are coming, and its for the kids.

then that's what happens then. Not having marner will hurt the leafs. They may be better off in the long run if they can get that d man though.

IMO Chiarelli made a big mistake, he should (and could) have signed Draisaitl at the start of his 3rd season to a 6 to 8 years contract somewhere between $6 and $7 million
