Schmaltz comes in at a lower cap hit and has had better stats the past 3 years. The deal would free up money to sign a winger and depth on D. NSH needs to go for it these next 3 years while Saros is at $5M.

True statement. Would he fit in as a pred or will he be a flop of a trade like Nick foligno to leafs or mark stone trade? If he does better the Johansen then great. But you run the risk of him not fitting into the system.

In terms of fitting into the system, I think I view Schmaltz and Johansen as VERY similar players. Johansen is a little more physical and aggressive I suppose, but they both have similar stats and playmaking ability.

Schmaltz is a center the same way Duchene is - in theory, sure, and he's played it a lot, but expect him to be a winger. And he's injured often enough that I don't think it's worth the risk. And you're overpaying for the swap.

I think their size difference with Hynes' system is what makes this a difficult trade. Joey has a couple inches and 40 lbs on Schmaltz. Afanasyev is also a big body prospect. It's an interesting trade idea, but not one I could see happening.
