Going for the cup - final 2022 version

Created by: GoCanes
Team: 2022-23 Carolina Hurricanes
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 12, 2022

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
This team is all in for the cup and I feel like it is pretty fair compensation for all players and trade partners in this scenario!

The Canes are among the top destinations for Malkin. $7mil x 3 gets it done as he sacrifices a year of term for a chance to win multiple cups. He upgrades Troch and is an easier contract on the back end vs expected production.

I admit, the Kane deal is un-Cane like. But we are going for it. Necas is moved (easily a 1st round value) plus 2 second round picks. Very fair value for a high end rental and more than Debrincat got. There will be room to re-sign Kane in 2023 as Staal will come off the books.

Nino re-signs a team friendly deal on dollars for an extra year of term ($5 x 4) with a real chance to win cups

The top line stays in tact, the 2nd line is among the best in the NHL (and a top line on the majority of teams), and the 3rd line stays in tact as the shutdown line. The 4th line is young and talented with Marty as the veteran presence. This line plays more minutes than a traditional 4th line to give our older vets a break on mins with the 2nd/3rd line. Drury and KK can also move up and down the 2nd and 3rd lines as players get hurt or need a night off. Next year, they likely fill gaps for Staal (KK) and Drury stays on the wing in a top 9 role or move to 4C.

We don't directly replace TDA on the PPlay, but Bear played about 1/4 of the year with Slavin on the top pairing. The Canes are confident of a bounce back after COVID and injury. The second pairing stays the same and rock solid. The third pair upgrades to Soucy over Cole and gives the 2 kids a shot (Chatty is more physical/defensive) (Keane is more finesse and offensive) depending on the style of the opponent. And the PP is addressed with a 5 forward 1st unit. Keane or Soucy and be the QB of PP2 if the 5 forward unit struggles and Bear or Slavin needs to step into PP1.

GK stays rock solid/Jennings winners with Koochie ready in the event of injury.

Canes go from suppressing opposition to outscoring opposition in one offseason? Let’s hope so because that defense is very light.

Is it that different though? I mean, is it really light compared to last season? Our top 3 defenders are back. Don't forget, TDA was in the 3rd pairing for the first 1/3 of the year. The metrics on Slavin and a healthy Bear were strong. The second pairing is the same and very strong. I don't see Soucy and Chatfield as a downgrade vs Cole and Smith. Smith was a winger for crying out loud and barely got a contract last offseason. And he could easily be brought back into this roster if needed. He's cheap. Chatfield was solid as 3RD last season and has earned it.

Carolina needs to add more. Martin obviously isn't under contract, so why wouldn't they just sign Strome instead of letting him walk and in turn trade Kane for Martin? That's bad asset management on the Hawks part which is why they pass.

Because the Hawks are an example of bad asset management smile

Under this scenario - it's a sign and trade. Necas at $3.5 x 2. Strome had a QO of $3.6, correct? And I think Necas has more potential and would like to flip to C.

And just curious then, do the Hawks only want picks? If so, toss in a 1st and we can trade Necas elsewhere for a 1st. The net/net is the same for the Canes. I don't think Kane is getting more than a 1st and two 2's.

Yes, that was Strome's QO. $3.6m however he's shown more then Necas at this point. Does Necas have more potential...possibly I won't argue that.

Respectfully to Mr. Bear…he’s not a top pair defenseman on a cup winning team. When I watch him play, sometimes I wonder if he needs his eyes check. The angles he takes to the puck are way off. Maybe he just needs glasses? Damn, I might be onto something there.

You are light a top 4 defenseman. The Canes were light a top 4 defenseman last year too - so I guess we agree.
