I think you'd have to buy out Johnson. Have another team sign him. And then trade for him. Caps did something similar with Brooks Orpik IIRC.

It's called normal. Bettman said recently the rules aren't changing. It started with Patty Kane sitting until the playoffs so Chicago could trade for Andrew Vermette. Leafs did it with acquiring 2 zombie contracts in Horton and Clarkson so they could fit Marner back in. We all saw what Tampa did. The horse has left the barn.

How do you resign mackinnon and byram the year after? Don’t see it working out

I remember Calgary doing this a year or two ago with Michael stone. How was that different?

They'd have 16M. Mac would get 10 to 11. With Byram they'd likely have a log jam in the top 4 so they'd have to look at moving him or moving Girard.

They’d also have to sign or resign 5 forwards in addition to Mac & Byram. Mac gets $10-11, leaving $5M sign Byram + 5 forwards (including newhook )… no way U can sign Kadri to &7M, imo

The CBA only forbids the signing of players bought out using compliance buyouts for one year. There is no restriction on re-signing players on ordinary course buyouts.

Yeah, they'd have to move Byram or Girard. Only so much room in that top 4
