Keeping JT - part 2

Created by: SammyB
Team: 2023-24 Vancouver Canucks
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 15, 2022
Published: Jul. 15, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Contracts:

Miller takes a slight discount in exchange for the term he wants. I know giving an eight year contract to a 30 year-old is risky, but the whole point here is to contend for the next 3-4 years, and this allows us to do that.

Bo gets a well-deserved raise, Hog gets a prove-it contract, Dermot will hopefully have solidified himself as a dependable third-pairing guy who can play up if needed.

I'm kind of guessing on Kuzmenko. Let's he he scores 30-50 points, which seems realistic, this would the AAV for a bridge contract.

Trades:

With Schenn gone (and I don't think resigning him makes a ton of sense), we need a new partner for Hughes. It doesn't have to be Marino, but this is the type of trade I see us making.

We have to move some money out to make all this work, and unless Poolman surprises everyone this season, he's the most expendable contract. Myers is more expensive, but he's also the better player and has an NTC.

Why would the Canucks want a 33-37 year old forward eaning $7.5M/yr?
What makes you think Miller wants to extend or take a discount? He can likely get more money, sufficient term AND move closer to wherever he calls home if he just plays out his contract and becomes a UFA.
They need to move him if they want to be better in the future, and they will need the cap space.
The Canucks and Miller seem to have overestimated his value or he would already be gone.

I'm not convinced keeping him is the best move either. But it seems like the team is leaning that way and I agree with them that trading him for pennies is a mistake. If we do keep him, this is what I'd like to see, and I don't think it's completely unrealistic.
