I have so many issues with this.
1. The fact that you re-signed Dwight King is the first, HUGE red flag. Did you even watch a single game since he's been on our team? Maybe he was good a few years ago, but there's no way he deserved to be back.
2. The fact that you didn't throw in any incentive for VGK to pick up Plekanec is alarming, because it's a little unlikely that they do it. He's at the twilight of his career, dry on offense, with huge salary.
3. Signing both Ott AND Martinsen, imo, isn't ideal, but that's preference. I think they take up too much space on the roster as no-skill bangers, something that has lost its value in the NHL.
4. I didn't understand the Florida trade. Granted, I know nothing about Matheson, but he doesn't look significantly promising on the scoresheet. Seems like top 4 is his limit, if he gets there. In any case, you used him as a trade chip later on, even though his value is questionable. It seems like this trade was meant to dump Emelin, and put in Carr (who can't find his spot) + 3rd as sweetener. Overall, this is probably your best trade. It's OK.
5. The Avs are asking for something like Galchenyuk + Beaulieu + 2nd rounder for Duchene (more or less). What makes you think they'll take two mid-low value assets, one low value asset, + 1st rounder?
6. RNH is definitely worth more than Shaw, even with your minor sweeteners. I think you're counting on him being expendable too much. The RNH trade would require Galchenyuk, or Shaw+Beaulieu, something of the sort.
7. I'm not sure which trade is the worst between WSH and OTT, but before we discuss Ovechkin, I'd like some of whatever the hell it is you're smoking. You'd need to trade at the MINIMUM like two and a half Galchenyuks, and I'm not convinced that'll even land him. Galchenyuk + Pacioretty still might not land the trade (even though Patch has had identical 5-v-5 goal totals since 2011).
8. And what about that Karlsson trade? Wait no, now I'm convinced this was worse than the previous trade. At least the Caps are frustrated and CONSIDERING a blockbuster trade if it keeps them in a cup-winning position. Why the hell would Ottawa consider trading away the best defenseman in the league when they're so close to the cup, especially since Karlsson is the driving force for their team and a huge part of their playoff success? Ottawa will NOT give a 26 year old for a 31 year old, especially since the 26 year old is better than the 31 year old (who, yes, is still elite). No amount of sweetener prospects and picks will change this fact, so you'll need to give more than you get. Think more like Galchenyuk + Weber, and since no GM is dumb enough to offer something like that, I don't even know if that's enough to land a trade. This trade is terrible on so many levels.
