Year 1 CGY Rebuilds

Created by: GM69
Team: 2022-23 New York Rangers
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 19, 2022
Published: Jul. 19, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Only posited because there were a few CGY tank for Bedard posts. Of course they only do a rebuild if they trade Tkachuk as well. https://www.capfriendly.com/armchair-gm/team/3483913

Chytil is a young middle six center/wing that showed poise in these past playoffs. If he builds on his experience, he could turn into a solid 2nd line center/wing. Constantly a positive CF% relative to the rest of the team. Was over +8% at 5v5 in the playoffs. He needs a faceoff coach though as his career 40.5% win rate won't do in a 2nd center role. Not even 23, he still has plenty of room to grow.

Lundkvist is a higher end defensive prospect. After success in SHL, he had a tough adjustment to the smaller ice size. He looked pretty solid in his brief NHL stint, but NYR preferred the qualities Schneider had more (more physicality). Viewed essentially as a B grade version of Adam Fox.

Reaves was just included for cap purposes. Two 1st rounders speak for themselves.

Tough year to rebuild as the top end of next years draft is so good. Would be hard to outsuck the Coyotes, Habs, Blackhawks, Flyers. Unfortunately I think Calgary trades Tkachuk for a relatively competitive package and fields a team that misses the playoffs by one or two spots securing the 17th pick or something.

Losing their entire top line (Gaudreau, Lindholm and Tkachuk) could make it close as no one else on that team is a "superstar". It's really hard to win without studs. Mangiapane could be traded after the season he had (someone would buy him) and Hanifin/Toffoli could also be traded due to their mid cap hits/term. If CGY were to rebuild, now is definitely the time to do so.

I honestly think whoever picks Michkov will end up having the best rebuild, and he may fall if there is no resolution to the russia issue. I believe he's signed in the KHL until the end of the 2024-25 season, which essentially means the team that picks him can "bottom out" for two more years (2023-24 and 2024-25), staying at the top of the draft board for the 24 and 25 drafts.

I agree with what you're saying and I would like to see the Flames tear it down to rebuild properly if it came to it, the pieces they have to move right now are perfect to load up on young talent with Backlund, Tanev, Toffoli, Lindholm to an extent etc. but the Flames ownership group is so passive in its will to win anything that they would rather sell out season tickets and 4 playoff games a year than to tear it down to the studs and not make as much money. Hence the Flames decades of perpetual mediocrity.
