Description
For the record, I don't think VGK should do this and I don't think they will but half the moves that they've made were moves I didn't expect them to make. That said, this is how I would try to get it done.

Roy should probably be in the $3m-$4m range but with Stephenson signed to $2.75m I could see him signing in that general price range as a bridge contract.

Hague is another player that should make more but since he doesn't have any arbitration rights he may be forced to sign an offer sheet or a lower rate on a short deal. An offer sheet is a very good possibility but he would probably have to weigh tax implications when deciding on a team to sign with and may chose to stay with familiarity and push his value up much higher by the time he becomes a UFA.

The Tkachuk trade was based off of the trade for Eichel (Tuch, Krebs, 1st & 2nd). Obviously Tuch's age and contract made him much more attractive than Karlsson, but Karlsson's two way ability gets us at least in the same ballpark. My guess is that VGK may need to throw in another piece (Korczak or Dorofeyev?)

Martinez would be a great mentor and D partner for Seider as Detroit looks to turn the corner and would probably relish the chance to finish his career close to home.

I tend to agree but this is what we always say about trades like this before they happen and right after they become official we all say, "That's it?"

Like I mentioned, I used the Eichel trade as the standard. Tuch being more valuable than Karlsson leads me to believe that VGK would have to add another prospect but I do thing we're at least in the ballpark.

The trades you refer to probably don't match the situation, on several levels. And that's before we even get to the questions it raises: Does Karlsson have Calgary on his NTC list? Would Tkachuk really sign long term in Vegas? Does Calgary view Karlsson as anything more than an onerous contract at this point? We're now into a lot of ifs and a lot of stretches. It adds up. And then on top of that, they'd have to wrangle the cap clearing. You seem to hope it will be quite painless. I think that recent experience should warn you otherwise. And so it keeps adding up and adding up...

Those are all very good questions that don't really need to be answered in a hypothetical world because these are just exercises in possibilities. Your point about cap clearing is very important though. I had a feeling that Pacioretty would be moved but I thought that he would have some sort of positive value given his performance and the fact that his contract has only one year left on his deal. I was incredibly wrong about that.

Yeah, maybe in a ballpark on Jupiter.
