Team: 2022-23 Nashville Predators
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 22, 2022
Published: Jul. 22, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
They'll have to pay the piper next year with a trade of either Johansen or other big money to retain the likes of Jeannot and Fabbro, but it's been a long time since NSH was able to grab a big name outside of developing themselves. Tkachuk is one of those guys that you take a shot with. Still think the CGY trade needs some finetuning, and can definitely see another team offering something a bit more appealing.

Trades
1.
NSH
  1. van Riemsdyk, Trevor
  2. 2023 2nd round pick (WSH)
Additional Details:
Clears cap for Tkachuk, gets a reliable bottom 2 dman who can play on both sides, grab a 2nd to supplement the 1st they're shipping out to CGY.
WSH
  1. Ekholm, Mattias
Additional Details:
WSH has the Backstrom LTIR money to spend, always thought they could round out the left side, let Fehervary and Alexeyev take their time to develop.
2.
NSH
  1. Tkachuk, Matthew [RFA Rights]
Additional Details:
Think he makes a lot of sense in NSH, bolsters their top 6 and makes them a legitimate threat in the West.
CGY
  1. Afanasyev, Egor
  2. Glass, Cody
  3. Tolvanen, Eeli
  4. Tomasino, Philip
  5. 2023 1st round pick (NSH)
Additional Details:
Thought about throwing Granlund into this trade in place of other pieces but I think NSH would be in trouble without him -- plus it lets Duchene stay on the wing where he thrives. Tomasino is as blue chip as NSH has to offer. Glass' pedigree has him atleast breaking into a bottom 6. Afanasayev is a diamond in the rough IMO, think he'll have a great chance in CGY. Tolvanen has shown flashes that I think get him to a 2nd line somewhere. I think CGY may want more developed talent, but this isn't a terrible route to take given the circumstances.

I don't see this being a move the caps would make. Backstrom is not guaranteed to be out the entire year, and certainly not the next two years as well. Taking on Ekholm's contract would be a massive risk given that he's already 32 and has 3 more years. He is also a LD, of which the caps have much more organizational depth in Gustafsson, Johansen, Carlsson, Alexeyev. A move like this would only make sense if they move out Orlov, who at this point I think is a better player than Ekholm

That's fair. I think Orlov is going to command some good money in FA -- maybe even more than EKholm is currently signed for. And I know Backy isn't guaranteed, but I think they should pull a Tampa and try game the system. It was between WSH and OTT for Ekholm, just thought it would help with Caps' playoff push.

Yea I think you can only pull a Tampa if the player doesn't think they can come back beforehand, and I think Backstrom does. If he were a RD they would seriously consider it imo

I agree that Ekholm (or Mcdonagh) should be the odd man out if NSH traded for Tkachuk due to the depth they have on the left side. I just can’t see Poile trading Ekholm the first year of his extension or Mcdonagh before he even plays a game in Nashville.

Yeah I'm siding with you there, still don't really understand the McDonagh trade for that reason alone. Granted, no one forecasted Tkachuk being available. My other thought was throwing Granlund in the CGY deal and nixing an Ekholm trade all together. Just don't know how I feel about Duchene being a 1C.
