Can the Flyers be saved

Created by: Justin_LetsGoStars
Team: 2022-23 Philadelphia Flyers
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 25, 2022
Published: Jul. 26, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
-Sean Coutourier and Ryan Ellis should be back to start the season. Hopefully they aren't too affected by their injuries last season. Ellis had 4 points in the 5 games he played last season and should be a solid 2nd or 3rd pairing guy.

-Hayes hasn't been scoring a lot of points but his points per game ratio is very good, so if he can play a full season for CGY, he should put up some solid numbers for them.

-The team might need to look at trading Risto and possibly Ellis at the deadline, especially if they are playing well during the first half of the season. Sanheim is going to get a raise after this season and Philly has too much cap locked up in their D. After this season, they'll have $12.1M roughly in cap space.

-This team has playoff potential under Torts, which should help Hart and the core overall.

Trades
1.
PHI
  1. Kylington, Oliver [RFA Rights]
  2. Monahan, Sean
Additional Details:
I'm sure CGY wants Monahan out of CGY as he's been lackluster at his cap hit for the last few seasons. He's only 27 and could be re-signed for cheaper after this upcoming season. Kylington for some younger defenseman coming in.
CGY
  1. Hayes, Kevin
  2. 2023 3rd round pick (NYR)
Additional Details:
M-NTC is a 12 team no trade list. CGY getting Hayes would bolster their depth down the middle and would be a solid 2C for them.
2.
PHI
  1. 2023 2nd round pick (BUF)
BUF
  1. van Riemsdyk, James
  2. 2023 5th round pick (PHI)
Additional Details:
BUF has the cap space and could be looking to add for a semi-competitive team. No risk as JVR has one year left on his contract and could be traded at the deadline to a competitive team looking for a rental.

I think career pts/g speak for themselves. Not to mention his bloated salary.

So Hayes who is at a career .600 isn’t as good as Backlund who is a career.527?

Remember, Backlund has past his Prime, Hayes is still in it, for 2 mill more I’d take Hayes 100 times over Backlund. Both are good 2-way players, but Hayes is far better at production in the last few seasons. Backlund would probably be a 4th line C in Philly right now…

Your arguments are absolutely horrendous and keep emphasizing why Hayes is better in the end.
A Hayes for Backlund swap would have Calgary adding at least a first, probably a top prospect as well. The offer above is bad for Philly, and im not even a Flyers fan

We're talking about Monahan, not Backlund. Regardless, nobody would take Hayes for 7.1M

the trade is clearly Monahan and kylington. Monahan has a higher career pts/g than Hayes(0.70 vs 0.60) He has 1 year left on his contract at a lower AAV than Hayes. No team is going to give up at 24yo defensemen who had more points than Hayes and a center with 1 year left (even as a cap dump) for Kevin Hayes dead weight for 4 years. He makes 7.1M and broke the 50pt mark once in his life. His Corsi is below 50% so worse than both Backlund and Monahan, and has more term. Nobody is paying you to take a bad contract. Vegas had to pay Carolina to take Pacioretty who has 0.76pt/g and a 57.8CF%. Nobody is taking Kevin Hayes off your books at 7.14M AAV for free. They certainly aren't doing it for a top 4 d who had more points and Monahan, who has 1 year left at a lower cap hit.

Wait, you’re still trying to argue that Monahan is better? My god, that ship has sailed. Hayes is better than Backlund, any team who has the cap space would takes Hayes over Backlund, Monahan isn’t even in question

Also, not my books, I’m a sens fan. Just thought this was hilarious

I think Hayes is a bit overpaid, I agree there. 6 mill should be his price point, granted Monahan should be in the 2-3 range and Backlund around 4… granted the cap will rise, currently they are all about 1M+ over…

Monahan is certainly overpaid right now. He has been injured for the last two seasons, so the majority of his deal was reasonable. With only 1 year left, it is much easier to stomach than 4. Backlund is a bit overpaid as well, but he is consistent on defense, ok, and steps up in the playoffs. I'm less concerned about his remaining 2 years. He will probably retire anyways, as he will be 35

Damn, I thought he was younger. Honestly, was always a fan of Monahan, really hoping he has a bounce back year, but I also don’t think Philly or Calgary should be paying for assets right now. Both teams should focus on a rebuil/retool.

Side note: if the Flames do absolutely awful and finish dead last, having the battle of Alberta also be a McDavid vs Bedard rivalry could be awesome for the league

It has been my hope for Many years that Calgary would tank just once to draft a franchise player. Interesting fact: Calgary has never drafted higher than 4th overall (Sam Bennett). Monahan and Tkachuk are next at 6th. That's why we hate Edmonton so much.
