Another Nylander trade because why not read descriptions

Created by: GMBL
Team: 2022-23 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 26, 2022
Published: Jul. 26, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Not a fan of the Leafs trading Nylander just to do it, but perhaps they would be a better team this year if they were to do these trades.

Inspiration for the Meier trade:
https://thehockeywriters.com/maple-leafs-2022-offseason-trade-targets-left-wing/

Yes, the team is still over the cap so they would need to make moves still. Perhaps Necas would only be signed for 3-3.5m though which would give some relief, and Holl exchanged for a cheaper option. Would be less than ideal but Kampf could also be moved out.

Trades
1.
TOR
  1. Necas, Martin [RFA Rights]
  2. 2023 1st round pick (CAR)
Additional Details:
This was the rumored offer for Tkachuk from CAR
CAR
  1. Nylander, William
Additional Details:
Necas would need to be signed to a deal that the Leafs can afford. I'll just assume he takes 4mx3.
2.
TOR
  1. Meier, Timo
Additional Details:
He's in a similar situation as DeBrincat but as far as production goes, he's not as good. The Sharks won't trade him for a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd though. The ask will likely be a young player+top prospect+1st rounder

Of course there are probably other teams in on him and they will take the best offer.
SJS
  1. Kerfoot, Alexander
  2. Robertson, Nicholas
  3. Sandin, Rasmus [RFA Rights]
  4. 2023 1st round pick (TOR)
Additional Details:
Meier could be assumed to be as a rental for the Leafs, there is the possibility of making moves to sign him next season but qualifying him is too risk for the Leafs.

If the Sandin situation isn't close to being resolved, then the Leafs might as well move him, Kerfoot may or may not have SJ on his list but chances are they would flip him in the season anyways so he might be open to waiving for them.

Perhaps the Leafs can work on these trades simultaneously, and pull off the Nylander trade first, then put in the condition that the Sharks get the better of the TOR or CAR pick.

The Nylander trade could perhaps include a swap with Holl and Bear (but that would depend on him having a low enough cap for the Leafs).

We dont mind paying for young power forwards. The QO doesnt scare me that much as we have a ton of cap space for next year. If a long term extension cant be reached, we can do the QO and just give us more time for a contract. Meier will be young enough that we would pursue the contract. Doing it before the QO would be beneficial.

Based off Waddell's track record, and more recently DeAngelo, I'm going to disagree. Unless he's worth 10m after next season (I do suspect he will have another career year as he did the last time he was in a contract year), I don't see CAR acquiring him without a prior extension. Need to also consider that he could also accept another QO at 10m the following year and become a free agent, but also they would be paying him 10m in real dollars this year and the next, and possible the one after that if he just keeps accepting his QO.

Anyways, I would still like to hear your mock trade for Meier with or without an extension if you have the time and desire. SJ doesn't really have much cap either but perhaps they can take on 7m (Necas extension+1 year rental cap dump).

Waddell has a track record of not paying 28-30 year olds big dollars over 7-8 years. yes. That is driven by Eric Tulsky's age and performance correlation analysis. That is how he got started in the league, btw. TDA wasnt worth paying top 4 dollars for when he was a PP specialist. He couldnt be trusted in defensive situations even with Slavin covering his rear end. The first couple of reports out of Philly were how they were going to try to hide him in 5v5 play. You just paid a guy 5 mil per and then have to hide him on the 3rd pairing?!?! super smart.

As you have seen, if a young to mid 20s star becomes available we are typically in the final 3.

I dont know what SJsask would be. They want strictly futures do they want to compete? If it is a future package: Necas, Drury, and 2023 1st. We would probably have to throw in Gardiner to make the money work this year. If they are looking futures only type package, I dont see that mattering since they arent trying to win now. With an extension, throw in Heimosalmi or Nishikin (their choice) and a 2024 2nd if Gardiner doesnt play 15+ games this season.

Now that I look at it DeAngelo is turning 27, so what you said in terms of the age category seems to add up.

Based off Burns still deciding to move on after Grier told him about the direction of the team, SJ seems to be moving in the direction of a full-tear down rebuild similar to CHI expect not as aggressive especially with the Karlsson and Vlasic contracts, and forwards signed to long-term deals. Grier doesn't seem like he wants to force anyone out, unlike Davidson. I could see them moving on from Meier if they can get a good return for him.

I think Necas+Drury+2023 1st+Gardiner should work unless they are looking for a massive overpay.

I added this in my previous post about DeAngelo

It wasn’t about age but his overall play wasn’t worth 5 million

Phi is paying Ristolainen 5.5m and it wasnt even like he had a career year in terms of production if I recall correctly when they signed him to that. It's like they wanted to prove that they didn't give up a ton of assets for nothing. So, can't really be surprised with what they are doing over their. I feel sorry for Hart, if there's a goalie I want traded out of a bad team, it's him. They never seem to be able to treat their goaltenders right in terms of development or keeping them around even when they were a better team. Maybe, a Hart+JVR for Bobrovsky (with 3m retained)+futures trade.

Philly is going to be mediocre for a long time and its going to be painful to get out of it.

We stick to our guns on contract evaluation even if it was a 26 year old .75 ppg defender. It has helped us acquire assets for very little in return.
