Team As Constructed - no Miller Trade

Created by: EmilieCastonguay
Team: 2022-23 Vancouver Canucks
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 27, 2022
Published: Jul. 27, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Assuming that Miller does not move in the offseason and no additional moves are made to fix the Defense, the team as constructed will have a deep forward core that allows for:

FWD:
1.) a more balanced attack between lines 1 to 3; 5v5, these lines could potentially play equally
2.) multiple moving parts
3.) reallocation of veterans to the 4th line who have been defensively responsible

DEF:
1.) movement of OEL to the RS alongside Hughes, allowing Hughes to still rove, and OEL to be a good safety outlet.

I don't like this defense much, but if the FWDs are more responsible and come back in support, it should lead to less getting pinned in their defensive end. As in previous years, Demko is there. God Bless Ian Clark.

Cap compliancy is reached prior to the start of the regular season by leaving Ferland on IR ($3.5M), then papering all waiver exempt players to Abbotsford; this includes Rathbone, Kuzmenko, Podkolzin and Hoglander ($3.617M). I believe this should allow the team to maximize their in-season Accruable Cap Space Limit.

Maybe if Poolman is hurt. Like it or not, Myers is a top4 D. He has been played like one by multiple NHL coaches, starting in his rookie year. He eats minutes. He is good from the red line out.

Is he a good top 4? Maybe not.

Perhaps Poolman and Schenn would be in a rotation as stay at home Dmen to manage Rathbone's inegration.

But if Schenn is regularly playing top4 minutes, the team is really in trouble.

Schenn was actually a decent partner for Hughes last year, so idk why the team would be in trouble if he gets more sheltered minutes....

I think he will be, provided that Poolman is healthy, and the team moves OEL to the RS. The Canucks will be faced with a decision come TDL as to retain him or trade him similar to Motte last season. If he can be extended at a club-favourable number, then he would be more valuable to them during a playoff push if he is faced with less minutes. If he wants to chase another Cup and/or indicates he won't resign with the Canucks, then he is a good trade chip for '23 or '24 draft capital.

Canucks could theoretically be forced to monetize Schenn as oppose to letting him walk for nothing, but I would bet on him more likely signing an extension for another 1 or 2 years at a cheap cap hit. I don't think Schenn is aching for another shot at the cup, and he's already playing reasonable minutes for his capabilities. The only way he gets moved is if the Canucks can't re-sign him for cheap
