So were giving up one of the best defensive centres in the league who was definitely our best player in the Oilers series, for 2 fourth round picks smh

Agreed! obviously we don't need another LD.... but at the same time that's a cheap deal to take a flyer on a 23 year old former 1st rounder who has great size (6'2" 212lbs.) some NHL experience and is primed to take the next step.

After acquiring Weegar I don’t really think there is a spot for Kylionton in the Top 4 anymore. This year was his “breakout season” mainly because he was playing high mins. His whole career he never had a season like last year because he was always a bottom pair d man. There isn’t really a spot for him on this D core and he’s got a lot of potential going to waste

one of the best defensive players in the league?! I’m a flames fan and I really like Backlund but that’s a stretch. He’s also making more then our best center (Lindholm) who was voted 2nd in Selke voting and PPG. If I was another GM I’m not gonna spend a lot on a solid 2nd or 3rd liner making 5.5 million. He also hasn’t put up any crazy numbers at all in the last couple of years.

Ferraro, Megna and Vlasic? That’s absolute garbage . Lmao just because SJ have ton of Dmen doesn’t necessarily mean that they are good. Valamaki before his injury had very similar stats to megna this year in only 49 games played. Vlasics also washed. Valamaki is a big kid and former first rounder with lots of potential.

I never said hes better than Lindholm, im a Flames fan too and Lord Zebulon is a top 3 two way centre in the entire league thats how underrated he is as well as being criminally underpaid. But Backlund actually finished 13th in Selke voting, so that by definition makes him one of the best defensive players in the league, and if were being honest he was better than Lindholm in the Oilers series getting the McDavid assignment almost every shift. That is a tough player to give away for what equates to basically two career AHLers.

Vlasic
Ferraro
Megna
Nutivaara
Simek
Knyzhov

doesn't matter if he's better if he can't play, which is probably why you guys are trying to trade him. Plus SJ really needs to keep their futures

Wdym your futures? Most of those guys are 29 and have maybe played 50 total games in the NHL. Valamaki’s a big kid and a recent 1st round pick with lots of potential. Not sure what you mean about him not playing. He played in the AHL last year and wasn’t really given a chance in the Nhl. Calgary’s got arguably one of the best D core in the league. So there isn’t really a spot for him on our team. Valamaki next year would probably be in San Jose’s very weak D core. Not really sure why you be complaining about giving up a 4th and a 5th for a good prospect with tons of upside.

Hes on a 5.35 mil contract for 2 more years it isnt like hes an albatross, I think a team that needs a Danault type player would be willing to get him for actual assets a team like LA thats on the brink of the playoffs like the Isles or Buffalo even.

I agree about teams like Isles or Buffalo wanting him but what would you think would be a better trade for Backlund. I wouldn’t mind changing the trade

Well, just looking at history on capfriendly, it looks like he has a lot of injury history. Lots of articles about it...
2018-19: 44 games, ankle sprain
2019-2020: 0 games, torn ACL
2020-21: 68 games, 49 were in CGY during shortened 56-game COVID season
2021-22: 44 games, lower body injury

So my comment about him not being able to play seems supported... and SJ really should really be stockpiling picks in their current state of sucking. Yeah, his age and potential is a positive but it's still a big gamble based on his history. Guy has been absolutely plagued, and maybe if was another position, like RD, I would be more interested. It would make more sense to do a trade of players instead of futures, but not sure if CGY wants anyone from SJ.

I agree his past injuries have been a problem but getting him for that cheap i thought was a good deal for both sides. I figured in San Jose’s perspective, giving up a 4th and a 5th for a prospect with high potential was fair.especially considering San Jose could use a solid defensemen

Well you got agreement on that from another SJ fan so it's likely not far off. I just wouldn't do it for the reasons presented.
